I think it goes the other way. If he gets better at keeping the ball it'll allow him to stay out wide. But no doubt he did improve as the season progressed.

He should be able to improve. He's strong, he uses his body very well, his first touch is decent enough. More movement in front and around him would help.

I was never a fan of his passing range but his engine was brilliant when he was fit. Sadly managed by some terrible managers who probably ruined his career.
