Neither Barkley nor Sigurdsson can be relied upon to carry out the grunt work needed from a CM. Gana, Davies and Schneiderlin however all have the potential to add goals to their game and when do we ever set up with 3 DMs anyway? Look at the game currently being played: Barry is sitting as a DM but Gana and Davies have both been deployed as box-to-box CM types.

Tbf Sigurdsson yesterday did put a shift in getting back and trying to put tackles and blocks in. But in a CM role with the likes of Schneiderlin, Gueye or Davies in there with him it would give him the license to go and get forward and make things happen.

But it looks like Koeman wants Klaassen for that CM role to add the quality and goals so IF we want him and Sigurdsson aswell then Sigurdsson could be seen as a wide forward by Koeman?!

Our midfield is not the problem. Its the attack. Its dysfunctional. No threat. No pace. No width. No trickery. No goals.

In a sense I agree, the three of Schneiderlin, Gueye & Davies are all good players in their own right and although their quite similar, they have their own style also but we do need a more attack minded CM in there to compliment those 3. Now, will Koeman see Sigurdsson as that player or someone like Klaassen? Tbh either would be perfect imo! I'd like us to go for both if I'm honest!

The only point in doing that experiment would be if he was trying something different, all he is doing is shoehorning a league 1 striker into a wide position and removing any shred of creativity from the attack

Yeah but there must be a reason why it was Barkley that was dropped?! Yes he was poor last week but before that he was generally decent yet he got dropped and left out for an inconsistent Mirallas and Koeman kept faith with DCL. Funnily enough those 2 aren't in a position where they either sign back up or leave, so is Koeman starting to plan for life without him in these final games?

It's only my opinion but I think he's going. I think Barkley knows that under Koeman he's not gonna get enough chances in his preferred central position and will more often than not be shoved out wide and maybe also he's been tapped up and what's to go and try something new? I could be well wrong but that's what I think. It seems odd that other players are all signing new deals and he isn't. It's not a matter of money or ambition, so why isn't he signing?!

Honestly have no idea why he hasn't signed, or if he will do anymore mate, and equally honestly - i am getting towards the point of not really caring if he does anymore.

Don't wanna play for us, then don't - clubs bigger than any one player - homegrown blue or not

The Mirror is on fire tonight.

Could see something in this. Koeman personally scouted him a few times through out the season before last week Europa game! And by all accounts he's ready to leave in the summer?!.....

So big Ron was there midweek, interesting. IF he was, then he surely couldn't have come away without being impressed with Dolberg as well as Klaassen.

Some exciting names being linked, but we'll end up with Snodgrass and John O'Shea obviously.

Dolberg, Klaassen, Ziyech, Sanchez, Veltman, de Ligt... Take your pick!

I know we can't go on with a midfield 3 like that as their all a much of a muchness but this season that's what Koeman as gone with more often than not so clearly doesn't see Barkley as part of a CM 3. And he's looking to sign another, more attack minded CM, which looks like either Klassen or Sigurdsson are our main targets, so I don't see Barkley having a chance in CM under Koeman.

And Barkley has done a job out wide but he's not the long term answer is he. I'd much rather see a proper winger out there or a wide forward. But I'm sure Koeman will be looking for wide options aswell as he's not happy with, in his words, the productivity of the other player bar Lukaku and their goals and assists returns and has said he's looking mainly at attacking signings as he wants more goals next season!

So again, I just struggle to see where Barkley will fit in? And he was dropped yesterday, so in these final games, could Koeman be experimenting ahead of life without him?....

Easy.

Gana Morgan
CM
Winger Barkley
Striker
Again, it's all about options. The CM and CAM can alternate. You can drop a winger to push another CAM and bring Davies in etc.

Also, I've a feeling he'll want to play 3 at the back alot more next season and will get players in to accommodate that.

Ajax have a centre forward who is brilliant at holding the ball up and playing in team mates, so at us he'd get about 2 a season.

Haha so true is that. For has good a goal scorer Lukaku is his hold up play is so bad that we can't get our players into play in and around the box. But if you have a striker that can hold the ball up and link the play then it's a massive plus for the other players! Like the example you make with Dolberg, look at Costa at Chelsea and the job he does, Kane at Spurs! Along with Kane, between him, Alli, Eriksen & Son they have over 70 goals between them alone! It's some difference and a big plus. Between Lukaku, Barkley, Mirallas, Valencia & Bolasie and the likes I bet were struggling to break 40 goals between them. It's not enough and it's why Koeman is gonna try and address it in the summer.

It's as much about adding guts and leadership right through the squad, as adding quality, for me.

Only in very exceptional players do they go hand in hand.

Perhaps Klaassen is one of those players who is capable of a bit of shouting and aggression, we are woefully short in those areas too.

I could live with a bit of duplication in midfield if we had someone who could have taken yesterdays game by the neck.

Davies can be that man too, but it's too early and unfair to expect it of him.

Easy.

Koeman doesn't really play like that though, he's kind of been forced into that. He's a 4-3-3 man and will no doubt revert to it IF he gets the players in he wants.

And it is about options and I'm sure Koeman would like to keep Barkley as he is a good option amongst the squad but he's still not signed that new deal and Koeman as said if he doesn't he goes and I think that is the more likely out come right now....
