...interesting, £40m could look good in two years time.

The way player prices are inflating - in a could of years time 40m will get you what exactly?

40m all up front would be scary if he flopped, but like United did with Martial - there is a way of paying a huge fee without it all being up front and ultimately one that should you pay then the player will have shown the value of that fee.

Question for me becomes - are we financially in a position to strengthen the team to the extent we can get the best out of both Lukaku and Barkley, both require a level of player around them to do so, IF we aren't able to do so, then ultimately we could be better building a team without them...
Spot on. This has become my train of thought as well.

..I agree. I just wonder if what he really means is that he wants to play. Going to Chelsea with Costa etc might not appeal but I'm with you, he looks good enough.

The Ajax coaching staff have some VERY experienced old heads who played at the very highest level - and his coach Bergkamp had that big move to Inter which failed - so maybe he has listened - or maybe the lad is just smart enough to see what has happened to countless 'next, best things) who have chosen the big club over the best developmental one for them and suffered - and ultimately damaged their careers?

He's good enough but it's too risky for him with the World Cup next year not to be playing every week.

Barkley is not good enough to get in the Spurs team unless for example Eriksen leaves. Squad player maybe alongside Sissoko
on the bench.

Barkley is no better than Davies who has a better engine and more upside. Playing 4 midfielders - Gana, Morgan, Barkley and Davies - who
are all quiet similar in that they are not goalscorers and do not provide enough support for Lukaku makes no sense.

I do look forward to seeing what Steve Walsh has been doing for the past 12 months.
It's hard to assess progress as we don't know how many players will turn us down in the summer which may go on to be great. Also he can't control what a club values a player so we may be buying players who are further down his list. Therefore he may have the best intentions in the world but I find it difficult to assess.

Oh @Eggs , to further ridicule the links to that Italian defender, he was bought from Roma by Milan 2 years ago for 25m Euros - Roma have a 30% sell on fee as well, so if we bought him for 25m quid, Milan would make about a 1m profit - doesn't sound very likely does it ;)

If we've got any chance of aiming for a top 4, we can't play with 3 defensive midfielders. So one of Davies, Morgan, Gana will be dropped IMO.

I think Sigurdson for could easily play in that CM role with Ross in that outside attacking 3. They both can alternate and would complement each other.

In terms of goals, the other way of looking at it is none of our attacking players bar Lukaku can score. Mirallas, Valencia, Bolasie, DCL etc. That area is the most weak with the defence.

Personally, one creative addition to the midfield is needed if we keep Ross. He's not the problem.

The rest of the money is drastically needed for the back 4, keeper, and forward line.

I know we can't go on with a midfield 3 like that as their all a much of a muchness but this season that's what Koeman as gone with more often than not so clearly doesn't see Barkley as part of a CM 3. And he's looking to sign another, more attack minded CM, which looks like either Klassen or Sigurdsson are our main targets, so I don't see Barkley having a chance in CM under Koeman.

And Barkley has done a job out wide but he's not the long term answer is he. I'd much rather see a proper winger out there or a wide forward. But I'm sure Koeman will be looking for wide options aswell as he's not happy with, in his words, the productivity of the other player bar Lukaku and their goals and assists returns and has said he's looking mainly at attacking signings as he wants more goals next season!

So again, I just struggle to see where Barkley will fit in? And he was dropped yesterday, so in these final games, could Koeman be experimenting ahead of life without him?....

The only point in doing that experiment would be if he was trying something different, all he is doing is shoehorning a league 1 striker into a wide position and removing any shred of creativity from the attack
