There’s something about shaw which doesn’t sit right, whether his attitude or ability to take orders. And after seeing how right Mourinho was about Morgan Schniderrat I’d be reluctant to take another “big club” failure

I’m sure Gravy Train Steve has a list of left backs somewhere, probably next to his list of strikers
Mourhino has also been wrong on players
Mata , De Bruyne ,Lukaku to name 3

I watched the Marseille v Lyon game on Sunday and the more I see of both Ferland Mendy (we were linked heavily and Lyon bought him for less than 5m) and Jordan Amavi (on the Villa team that Gana was but rebuilt his career), the more I want to smack Sam for saying there's no suitable left backs. He and Walsh's only saving grace could be if Antonee Robinson is now highly regarded enough to save a spot for him next season.

Amavi's career didn't need rebuilding after that relegation season - he missed it all injured.

Its too simplistic a way to look at it.

Some people think Baines is finished, others don't. But by the looks of it nobody in football seems to think he is hanging his boots up just yet and at the time he was only a few weeks away from returning.

This would have left us looking at players who were not getting games at their current club who would also be willing to take a back seat to Baines when he comes back in to the side. All this whilst in a World Cup year. Its tough enough to get players in anyway without this scenario on top of it.

Also again with it being a World Cup year some players will not be willing to move right now. Our options should open in the summer so why pay a premium on a player when the season was as good as over at the time anyway.

Firminho date of birth 2nd Oct 91, transfer 23rd June 15 (makes him 23) if you are pulling hairs
Erikson was born 14th Feb 92, moved to spurs 30th aug 2013 (makes him 21)
Emre Can date of birth 12th Jan 1994, moved to liverpool 3rd July 2014 (makes him 21)

right on the first two, check the math again on can though mate ;)

I say safely say this for the summer and next season:

  • Baines is considered our best left back now. We won't sign a first choice left back in the summer, and Baines will be considered our best and first choice left back at least until May 2019
  • Bolasie is highly regarded by most people at the club and will be starting most games for us next season. No chance of him being sold
  • Schneiderlin's reputation and our lack of cover at defensive midfield will see him remain with us into next season
  • At least one of Jagielka and Williams will be with us next season starting the majority of games
  • Keane will be a mainstay of our defence next season and for years to come
  • Mori, our Argentine international and mate of Lionel Messi, will be hounded out of the club before any of the above

You think it's too simplistic because what you've laid out there is your perception not the actual thoughts of those in charge. They were examples of players who would have been more than willing to fight for a place on a great contract (Mendy was playing in Ligue 2) and it being a world cup year wouldn't gave deterred either imo. I can think of another too, look up Junior Firpo from Real Betis.

As I said in the post as well, Mendy was less than 5m and those are just three names off the top of my head which would be worth the investment and I'm a layman who doesn't have a worldwide scouting network.

Finally you say the season was over in January? Are you one of the people who don't want European competition next year? Because that's a leg up in attracting better players in the summer and regular midweek games is something our squad should get used to year after year.

But maybe we have a better option lined up in the summer who is not attainable right now. So we should get Mendy or someone as a stop gap? Its not as easy or straightforward as its looks.

No players give a toss about the Europa league. I wish that wasn't the case but its not a draw at all.
