Success?

I don't like it when you two argue ... it's like mummy and daddy arguing ... plus I'm not sure which is which and that's extra confusing.

I support the teams I support no matter what BUT I do find my interest in certain teams rises and falls based on how they are doing (which is natural I suppose). The Bucs in the NFL for instance I am at a low right now because the owners obviously don't care about the team and refuse to spend money.

However Everton, no matter what, remains on top and I just can't shake it. Even though they are perhaps the least likely team I follow to win anything. It's just not possible to not care about Everton the most no matter how far I move away, how little the chairman can help us, how annoyed I might get with the Prem glass ceiling etc. Everton is by far the least logical thing in my life by a long-shot ... but what are you going to do? No choice ... just carry on.

We're a lot alike. Everton have no business meaning as much to me as they do. But I'll be damned if I don't care about the Blues more than just about anything. It makes no sense. But there you have it. I'm lucky though. Everton have never really struggled since I've been supporting them. I wasn't around for the 80's but I also wasn't around for the 90's.

I was having this discussion with someone the other day about another one of my teams, The KC Royals. Keep in mind the Royals have had exactly ONE winning season in the last 20 years. ONE. They've been nearly the worst team every year. But when I was a kid in the 70's and 80's, they won all the time. It was boss. But just because they're bad I can't walk away. So if they ever were to make the playoffs again it would feel like winning the lottery. Once they are your team, that's it. There's no changing teams. There is no walking away. You're stuck in a lifetime commitment.

It's odd all this about multiple teams, from my perspective. I think most english everton fans pretty much only follow everton.

I follow the internationals too, but that's not universal and I think most scousers don't care about domestic rugby league or county cricket.

I wonder if that makes a difference?

Think you have hit upon something there. My dual nationality is known, with Bristol City being my adopted club since age 7 when I moved down here. My football "growing up" was mainly at Ashton Gate, not GP, and as City are pretty crud, they have very rarely played Eberton. 8 times in the old Div 1, and a couple of cup ties since.

So my view of Eberton/success is probably moulded by not being in Liverpool, not reading the Echo, nor talking to many other supporters, other than on here. And I havnt got Kopites in my ear at work everyday.

If ever I watch another sport I always find myself wanting the underdog to win without really caring. Probably most do. Can't say I 'support' anyone but us though. It wouldn't feel right.

Top 4 should absolutely always be the expectation. Because that is what football is about and that is what nil satis nisi optimum reflects. In the meantime, you rejoice in the wins, you curse the losses, and you hope for the best and drink when there's nothing left to do.

I want investment so that EFC can take its rightful place. But I'm ******* ecstatic that we aren't Chelsea or Man City.

Winning isn't the be-all and end-all of being a football fan, if it was you'd just check the scores at 17:45 on a Saturday (on the rare occasion you played at 3) and that would be it. Success as an Evertonian comes in many different forms unfortunately they aren't in the shiny silver and big forms, but overall this season has had more high than lows, and I think we have to see some success in that.
