Strangest Player We Were Meant To Sign

Moyes was pretty serious with a bid for Michael Essien IIRC, from Bastia in ligue 1.

Not particularly strange I guess, just a shame that we missed out on someone who went on to be genuine world class [Essien absolutely ruled the midfield for a few years at Chelsea].

Remember being told the other week we once tried to sign Nat Lofthouse. Not really strange like but just popped up now, seeing this thread.
Billy Bremner;
Catterick had a deal all sorted with the Leeds Board for 15K...until Revie told them he'd quit on the spot if they went through with it.

Martin Dahlin!!

Football: Dahlin reflects on Everton decision

(First Edition)

MARTIN DAHLIN, the Swedish striker, yesterday revealed how much he wanted to play for Mike Walker at Everton next season. But the grind of the relentless English season turned him off a pounds 2.7m move from Borussia Monchengladbach. He is likely to end up in Italy or Spain.

The 26-year-old agreed terms with Walker to join his international squad-mate, Anders Limpar, on Merseyside, but then 'I simply changed my mind. I could just not convince myself that final bit.

'I was very flattered such a great club as Everton wanted to buy me. And I was impressed by their manager. Mike Walker plays the football I like, less English-style. But the season is very long and I don't think that would have suited me.'

Weren't we after Arshavin for peanuts for a couple of seasons but never paid the money?

Not sure if that qualifies as strange
