Steven Pienaar

McGeady and Pienaar are two different types of players. Pienaar is a creative #10 playing on the wing, McGeady is an out and out winger. One likes through balls and backheels and the other likes taking on players and crossing. Pienaar may line up on the left wing but he plays more on left centre of midfield and only goes to the wing to when defending. IMO Pienaar and McGeady are not replacements for each other, they're a tactical change from one another. I think Executionersbong wrote a good post about how Martinez plays an asymmetrical line up using Pienaar.

I'm a huge Pienaar fan and even I can see his legs are pretty much gone, similar to how Osman has just lost a whole bunch of pace. I would prefer to see him in the CAM, as then he won't have as many defensive responsibilities (right now he always battling to get back to defend his side of the left wing) but he will still be able to do what he does best, keep possession and create.

I really wonder when Pienaar goes/retires who his replacement will be. When I think about it they're really aren't a lot of players like him around, he's pretty unique I feel. His quick feet, his vision in the final third, his chemistry with Baines, his backheels, his trick passes, his chip!, etc. The closest I've seen to him, might be Lucas Piazon or Thulani Serero and even then its a bit of a stretch. He's been a great player for Everton, he has been a part of so many near magical goals. I think Martinez is going to be hard pressed to find a true replacement for Pienaar.

I still think Pienaar's regressed, and is on the list of replaceables, But having said that, i felt he had a good game yesterday, so can't knock him for that.

I'd love Piazon here. Chelsea would probably sell him for the right price.

Somebody should remind him of this.

His final ball is atrocious and he rarely, if ever, pulls off an intricate pass these days. Only the quality of Baines and Oviedo has carried him through this season.

He has no pace, he can't shoot and isn't clinical enough even when given a gilt edged chance to score, he's scored once and gotten two assists in 23 league games. For a winger that's just not good enough at all.

Watching the West Ham game yesterday, to me it just seemed like all he wanted to do all game was pass to Baines. Was the only pass he ever looked for.

We spent most of the game playing stupid passes to eachother going nowhere, and Pienaar was a main culprit.

Never makes an incisive pass and his shooting ability is piss poor.

The free kicks he wins in advanced positions are a big plus when we have good options in Baines and KM

He's worth a lot more to us than just assists. He tries to make things happen by playing incisive passes and for some reason people fume almost as much when he gets these wrong as when Osman plays a simple sideways five yard pass out for a throw in.

Thought he was excellent yesterday. Did well considering they had everyone back trying to snuff out the threat he and Baines posed. It should be noted that despite a strong defence/entire XI's best efforts, they couldn't stop the left-sided partnership creating the goal that won us the game in the end.

The goal wasn't coming from anywhere else. McGeady wasn't going to make it and neither was Deulofeu. It came from those two because they're the two best players at cutting teams open with short passes, which is the way we are looking to play.
