If Walsh really did sign players over the manager's head or attempt to dissuade him from signing the players he wants, then there's no doubt that would be problematic. For instance Koeman has actually managed Schneiderlin- it should be a no brainer. The club needs to trust the manager on this one. Otherwise there's not much point him being here. Personally I don't think there is any issue with Walsh. However, and this is just speculation, perhaps he's been given specific directives and parameters to work within when it comes to recruitment e.g young players with potential for a great sell on value. Unfortunately when we as fans don't know exactly who's responsible for what, if things go balls up you get a lot of finger pointing and people shirking the blame. Happens quite a bit with managers and DOF's if it does go pear shaped.
I not a finger pointing at Walsh, but if the role of manager and DOF are not compatible for any reason the relationship will break down.
Just reading the quotes and they are quotes then this is a shaky relationship, the fault may be neither man's, but that of expectations in their role at the club.

He was assistant manager and scout
And? He watched training and sat in the stands offering advice IF it was wanted.

the role ofDOF is to have a transfer budget and sign player within that budget, he would also have a wages budget that he can go up to, all these negotiations then have to be signed off at an executive level MD/chairman.
Now they may be a problem with the signing off but the work is down Walsh

The role of a DOF is whatever the club stipulate it to be. There is no rule as to what a DOF does and doesn't do, he does whatever it is that you wish of him. There are different sorts all over the world, some are number crunchers with spread sheets and contract knowledge. Others are more football orientated, who will organise much of the background football stuff.

I presume you wanted Walsh for his ability to see rough gems and his team building ability, so you let him do what he's good at. If you're bogging him down with the negotiating of contracts (with current players as well as new), placing bids and working out the finer details of contracts and talking to agents.... then what on earth was the point in getting the bloke off us in the first place.

It's like asking a plumber to build you a house and wondering why it falls down. I can't believe your club are THAT stupid.

He's here to scout for talent and pass it on to those who make the final decision on whether or not to follow it up and make the deal.
He is not a scout he is a non-executive director that sits on the board, his job is to bring in player, not just recommend them for someone to bring in.

What's your club? the above seems to indicate it is not Everton

I thought Walsh had been brought in because of his fantastic track record of spotting a player.

Koeman knew from day one that we were bringing in a director of football and he was happy with it.

I don't know where the line is drawn but personally I would back Walsk over Koeman when it comes to transfers. He is the DOF and was appointed because he's very good at spotting a good player.

By all means, Koeman can say what areas we need to strengthen and say where the squad is lacking. But after that, it's walsh's job and he shouldn't be undermined.

Koeman knew that he didn't have complete control of transfers and should concentrate on managing the players that he has.

Walsh has proven himself sufficiently with the signing of Gana and should not be undermined in public.

As a club we have moved on from the Moyes/ Martinez days, when the manager had absolute control.

How do you know this for certain?
This is the definition of the role
"Director of football" is a term describing a senior management figure at a footballclub, most commonly used in Europe - and typically in the UK. ... The technical director role is generally different to that of a director of football, a position which usually involves overseeing the signing of players.
Now if he's not doing this he is not a DOF, just a scout

all threads on this forum is full of whining posts from people who don't actually know who's to blame for what, but they're just jumping on someone to fit their agenda, it's tiredsome. Why bother whinging and moaning when you don't know the ins and outs? seems a lot of wasted effort to me.
You may well be right but some clarity is needed, and I am not blaming him, I just feel his role of responsible for signing is not compatible to Koeman's ideas.
