Maybe you need to re-read my post Azz.

I was fuming / now annoyed, we didn't go ball out to win the league cup.

Im old enough to know what winning trophies feels like.. and we need one.. desperately.

Oh I know I'm not having a go! I completely agree.

No it's a genuine question that's being hi-jacked for some reason. I feel I'm a fan of a big club regardless of a League Cup win, but I was alive for when Everton last won a cup, so I'm wondering if that makes a difference.

I'm not being condescending by asking the question, but I'm just wondering if there's a difference in how critical it is for us to win a cup - any cup - because the reaction in the match thread felt like overkill.
Yes but a cup win, any cup whatsoever, would be a shot in the arm to the club. We are overlooked an awful lot and patronised and very rarely taken seriously, despite the fact we perform well in the league and have done for some time. I'm not saying all of this would change if we won a cup, but it would breed a more positive attitude within the club and we would actually have some fruits to our considerable labours. We need something to show for our efforts to push on and dispel the myth of the plucky little Everton team. If we don't take every cup or competition seriously, how are players we want, the media and eventually our fans supposed to?

Of course it is critical, winning things is enjoyable and is what makes you a big club.

Brilliant debate, lads...we're getting things done here.

I want Everton to win all the time, so if it's a Capital One Cup game and there's a team in Blue out there, I want them to win. If it's a pre-season friendly, I want the win, even if it ultimately means very little. I want us to win every game we're ever involved in.

However, I don't care if we go out of the Capital One Cup, as the emphasis on winning the overall thing was never there. If the manager came out and said "right, we're going for this" and put a full strength eleven, then I'd care, because it was a focus for the club. I wouldn't like it, because I think it'd be a drop in our stature, but I'd be forced to acknowledge the intent.

Not bolding to be condescending, just to clarify the point.

Of course we should focus on winning the league cup ffs. We should focus on winning every game. The fact we've won [Poor language removed] all in 18 years and never won the trophy before is more than enough to justify doing our best to win the game.

Of course the emphasis was there mate, RM didn't put a team out to loose or not focus on winning the game. Stones and Delefeuo (and robles) are the only real youngster, every other player is either a seasoned pro or has experience in PL.

He said in the press that he was unsure of his best starting 11 (going with what is already established) and that these players would be used.

The lack of silverware means that we cannot afford to win this competition, a win would have boosted the moral within the club and put us back on the map of silverware; its a cup at the end of the day and it goes in the history books

Yet the manager hasn't placed a priority on it and was prepared to play a rotated squad. Is Martinez wrong?

Numerous other clubs have done the same, regardless of recent domestic honours. Are they all wrong?

I guess it comes down to a yes or no - should Everton be playing a first eleven in every cup competition we enter, regardless of what the standard approach to the competition appears to be amongst our peers?

If the answer is "yes", then I guess there's a fundamental difference between your viewpoint and that of many Premier League managers. I'm not saying you're wrong, but I'd like to know why Martinez and co. are wrong if you're going to say "of course we should focus on winning the League Cup".

I think it's fair to say it was a rotated squad mate. I know it wasn't a team of youth players, as we have a decent squad in depth, but the changes from the last game immediately means it was a rotated squad by definition. You wouldn't have seen anything like that if tonight was a league game.
