The crowd has never been blind happy clappers. This idea of just unconditional support regardless of what the team serves up is what allows the mediocrity at Everton to flourish. Full houses every season at Goodison regardless of how poor the team is, where's the incentive for the board to improve anything?

If the team starts positively by pressing and getting tackles in, knocking the ball around the crowd will be behind them! If they start by dropping deep, letting arsenal have the ball and being generally crap (as ob many occasions) then frustrations will rightly be shown!

I think you misunderstand what some folks are hoping for.

It's got nothing to do with being happy clappers. It's about supporting the players...about creating a positive atmosphere that is helpful for the team. Lobbing abuse at players is completely counter-productive.

If you've ever played sports in front of fans you'd know you feed off the energy of the crowd.

I get pretty sick of the whole happy clappers thing to be honest. Wishing the atmosphere was a positive and productive one is not wishing the fans cheered their tits off for nothing.

It's like smiling on your wedding day even tho you know your bird has been smashing your best mate.

It really isn't though. Not sure why it's so difficult for some to understand that a negative, abusive atmosphere is a self fulfilling prophecy.
Well, that's not really what I mean tho. Negative atmosphere, obviously not. Go 2 goals down and still sing like you are up against Bayern? I mean, that's HUGELY admirable. But, again, whats to say the team will even respond in kind? The crowd there usually responds when there is something to respond to. Which is why it's been below average this year.

Why does it have to be singing like you're up against Bayern though? Why does it have to be such an extreme view of positivity?

It's about a supportive environment...not a tearing down of the players confidence with negativity and/or abuse. Groaning when a player passes the ball backwards is not helping them...only tears further from their confidence.

It's frustrating...I get it...it frustrates me too. For me, those moments are when the players need more support...not abuse. It only exacerbates things.

I'll say one thing that was beyond mental. The whole "YOU'RE S***" five times to Gylfi when he was taking a corner. How, on Earth, is that even not just completely shut down??

I do not think he is crap. I think he was VASTLY overpaid for, but that's neither here nor there. THAT sort of thing(ie: it's not constructive at all) I completely agree with.

I just think the supporters are seeing hugely negative football so they are expecting poor quality. And then it begets a self-fulfilling prophecy. I get your point tho, I really do. I'm just not sure how it can be changed. Expectations are about as poor as they were with Martinez at the end so the crowd is already annoyed.

Do people really think that screaming abuse at our own players will imbue them with confidence and make them play better?

We are our own worst enemy sometimes.
