Journalist Tim Johnson of Eye on Southport arrived at the scene about 20 minutes after the police had been called.

He says the incident happened at the Hope of Hart children's club, which is down a back street in a former warehouse building.

He says the victims were children, and describes one girl on a stretcher covered in blood.

"Her parents were running after her. It was horrendous. I’ve never seen anything like it.

"There were so many police cars. It was a mass of blue lights.

"I saw ambulance men and women in tears. People were in tears in the streets."

My head has gone a bit, to be honest.

Summer holidays, loads of us are just chucking our kids in clubs and whatever so we can get to work. It is in the back of your mind that they might fall and hurt themselves, or not have a good time, or any of that relatively trivial stuff but never that they may not come home and certainly not as a result of something like this.

As cliché as it is, and as much as they will almost certainly protest, my kids will be getting an extra tight hug later on.

Absolutely awful the more you read.

It's going to be more and more common unfortunately.

Times article yesterday highlighting the inadequacy of mental health services in the UK.
