Looks like we need to move again. I am useless arent I? Been working on it all day.

Will only be down for a few hours. Leaving it to the expert nerds so I cant mess it up.

I sought assurances that the new host could handle us - even at the busiest times (like Yesterday) but it turns out, they are struggling even at less busy times. Useless. I provided them all the evidence of hits, what to expect... everything. Basically if we cripple their server again - which would happen, we would have hours downtime. May as well move and get it over and done with.

So now I am having to move us to an even pricey place. For the nerds amongst us it will be our own server over at leaseweb, or on this (both same price really)

1042MB Ram / 2048MB Ram Burstable
80GB web space
1600GB bandwidth
cPanel
# Choice of UK (BlueSquare) or US (Colo4Dallas)
# 1 Fixed IP (plus 1 extra IP free with justification)
# Burst RAM double that of the guarenteed RAM (OpenVZ)
# HyperVM management panel for reboots, OS reloads and status checking.
# Unlimited reboots and OS reloads
I again am told (by various nerds) that the above bad boy should sail us through transfer deadline days. At the price it better f**king had. At any GOT meets dont expect me to be buying the pints lads!

Need to run it by Dylan to see what he thinks. Lisa wont let him on the PC though.... :whip:

depending on cost, specific to connection, how difficult is setting up your/our own server?

is there anyone here that has any experience of actually hosting?

looked into this a few years ago, knew a couple of people that setup hosting servers and were charging annual fees.

must be like a dating/lonely hearts style forum or magazine for like minded individuals to connect and share server space.

a bit like at the back of 'Q' or 'NME'..."wanted, bass guitar player, GSOH and all that bull, northwest, able to travel, rock and real blues, NO COLDPLAY!"

(sorry i cant be of more help)

Own server or vps?

(Suits, what you mention is what we did where I have my main European sites - what's called a "semi-ded" - but you have to know and trust the people you are sharing with. To be honest, many people in the situation to do something like that would run a mile from a shared server with a popular forum that's liable to traffic surges, which is why they tend to be on dedicated servers or VPS's.)

We decided against a dedicated server. Too much money, as we don't get paid, so we are on a VPS. Actually quite a nice one. A Harpertown cpu and more memory than you can shake a stick at.
