Maverick

Player Valuation: £8m
We just endured one of the worst games in a long time. The world is ending, we can't score, we can't defend, we can't manage and we won't spend money. We're in a relegation battle, we'll be playing Watford next year and could be relegated again. We're the new Charlton. David Moyes is the worst, Victor Anichebe is worse than him and Mo Fellaini looked like he never stepped on a football pitch before Sunday. Jermaine Beckford gets no playing time, Johnny Heitinga a world cup finalist?

After everything that has happened over the last 35 hours or so, our beloved Everton is still, yes still, just 3 points out of 9th place in the prem. Yes, we are just 3 points above the drop zone as well but we have more class than all of these teams below us combined. Outside of Fulham getting a point (should have been 3 late) against Chelsea today, it was a pretty good weekend for us as far as those ahead of us are concerned.

We're one game removed from the worst game ever, but we're just two games removed from putting up a 5 spot against Blackpool and lets be honest, it could have been 8 or 9. Maybe this is the beginning of the end for Everton, but I'd like to believe this is the end of the beginning for us.

I leave you with this... I know Independence Day isn't exactly an analogy for EFC, but I'd like to believe the part about us not going quietly into the night rings true.

I love these Yanks.

I really do.

They always lift my spirits.

Nice touch with the Bill Pulman speech too.

But my Sunday was like this yesterday. First half of the game before that speech anyway

- "we're in Hell right now, Gentleman. Believe me. ... we can stay here and get the s***t kicked out of us or ... we can fight our way back into the light... we can climb out of hell one inch at a time"

You'd honestly think he was talking about Everton now.

the:

"we're in Hell right now, Gentleman. Believe me. ... we can stay here and get the s***t kicked out of us or ... we can fight our way back into the light... we can climb out of hell one inch at a time"

quote is where I'm at right now.

Feel like I unfortunately stayed there and got the **** kicked out of me yesterday.

Feel like (Everton) need to give someone a good kicking.

Glad we yanks can bring something to the discussion here. If optimism is it, then so be it.
It was a bad game. The fact that is was THAT BAD right after a game that was THAT GOOD makes it sting all the more (as Maverick said), but we can and will do this.

We have class, we have a fighting spirit. We saw glimpses of hope on Sunday. Arteta showed improvement. Bily showed some toughness and an edge that I didn't think he had. Baxter brought some vitality.

No one knows what happened to Felliani. You don't go from being the best player on the field in the previous 3 games to being the worst overnight. Maybe rumors of Chelsea got in his head, who knows. No reason to think he won't kick his own ass into shape. No "big" clubs will want him if he continues to play like that.

Cahill was just a non-factor, off the pace. With his competitive drive, there is no way that happens again.

Vic was poor, no denying it. But he battled.
I'm sure Knight, Wheater, Cahill, and Robinson are glad they don't have to see him again. Not that they weer scared of him scoring, but I'm sure each of them has few bruises (or ripped up knee) that has Vic's name on it. If he's not going to show great skill (and he didn't) at least he can show heart and cause some chaos and frustration on the D. He did ok at that for about 60 minutes and then just got tired. Had the midfield been better, the work Vic had done would have produced some more fruit (not for him, but for the rest of the team).

Coleman is young and will have games where his touch eludes him. I'm not giving him a pass, but others were far more horrible than he was.

Neville tried too hard to engage. I see this as him trying to make up for the complete ineffectiveness of Felliani and to a lesser extent Arteta, Cahill, and Coleman. His flaws get magnified when he tries to do too much, and seeing the crap on the field the rest of us were, he tried to get more involved to spark something, anything. He is better when he (like Hibbo) can focus on just being a RB. If Neville is on the field, we want him to be forgettable because if we remember his play, chances are really good it was for mistakes, turnovers, hoofs, poor crosses, etc.

I can find glimmers of hope from each player (even Vic) from that debacle of a game.

Shoot, even Moyes brought on subs early enough to make a difference! Glimmers of hope. One bad game. Desperately hopes next game puts us on the upswing. COYB!

I blame it on the rain... took the poof right out of his hair. How's he supposed to play like that????

You just summed up Everton in that very sentence.

no way hose`. theres been too many `we are really good - honest we are and we`ll do the biz next game` moments this season- we are as complacent as it gets, we need to rip into the opposition with a mean streak that we havent shown this season- its not good enough to sit back in the english prem and invite teams on to us which reached its pinnacle/depths at Bolton. who is it at Everton that is breeding this `nice tippy toe/ tap it about and dont upset the other team` mentality when we ourselves are shown no respect by anyone, be it opponents on the field or referees or the media. GET OUT THERE AND BE FIRST TO EVERY BALL OR DIE IN THE ATTEMPT then we will be able to play most teams off the park

Nice perspective ;)

Ever feel that some Blues just expect/predict the absolute worst - i.e your first paragraph - so that they may avoid a level of disappointment? A sort of self-preservation thing. Me? I'm staying optimistic. (With gritted teeth.)
