So who had lack of depth in central midfield being one of our biggest issues in their pre-season evaluation?

Because I certainly didn't

I was much more worried about what would happen at center back, but injuries to Delph and Gbamin, the suspension of Schneiderlin and the sales of Williams and McCarthy, and the loaning of Beni and Besic have highlighted the fact that we're pretty gosh darn thin in the center of midfield right now

Basically we have Gomes, Schneiderlin and Davies right now (And possibly Delph if he is indeed healthy, but how long will it be before he gets injured again?)

That's a tad terrifying actually

I'll hold my hands up and admit I didn't see this coming at all. The discussions around left/right back, wing, defense and striker were in great supply, but this area seemed to slip under the radar

You'd think that Brands will have to forgo his usual aversion to buying in January to get at least one more midfielder in if Gbamin is indeed going to be out for a long time?
One of the first things I said after the window particularly when Silva declared he frantically wanted Doucoure, was how slim we are centrally throughout the pitch.

We are literally 3 injuries away from a disaster with a fully fit squad. Now it's even more precarious as Gbamin was supposed to be the CB cover aswell as Gueye's replacement. A kean or Mina injury now really is season over material.

A lot of people said we lacked quality and depth if Gana gets sold.

But it's more the quality that's the issue.

Gomes/Siggy together is not a good midfield no matter WHO you put at DM. Gomes is the bigger problem as he's a terrible defensive player and can't play as CM without two very athletic and capable players around him.

Even without Gbamin's injury (who we were told would be given time anyway....) we were always hoping on Gomes and Delph.

Both are pretty injury prone.

Even with all players fit, we lack a centre midfielder who can drive possession forward, or even pass the ball forward.

The two defensive midfielders who pass sideways, with every attack focused down the wings is a big part of how Silva sets up.

We effectively have:

CM:
Gomes : Either great or bad, rarely any middle ground

Delph : Injury prone

Davies : Still emerging

DM
Gbamin : Needs time to settle + now injured

Schneiderlin : Awful

Baningime : Disappeared

If we had managed to get Doucoure (who i wanted over Zaha) then we would have a seasoned premier league player who can play both positions and adds goals.

We really need a box to box player and one who can play both DM/CM.

The fume over people wanting Silva out should be immediately dismissed with the fact that he somehow anticipated a midfield fitness crisis. Imagine if he hadn't signed "too many" midfielders, we would be dipping into our academy players.

For what it's worth I wish Silva would give Beni a proper chance but trust the system and that
