So, this Syria thing...

Perhaps, but no reason for military action. We've been sanctioning Zimbabwe for years but there's no reason to get involved in their domestic matters.

There's levels of involvement. You'd get absolutely zero support for military intervention in Egypt as it's quite clearly a conflict between two very defined sides. The problem with Syria is solely the presence of chemical weaponry.

Hmmm. The Syrian massacre was 'carried out' by a regime the Americans want ousted; the Egyptian massacre was carried out by a regime that toppled Muslimists and they do business with.

That's the distinction.

Anyone got any interesting ideas how to solve the issues in Syria??

Solving the Israeli problem is the key. The Palestinaians plight is at the heart of that region's instability. America's poodle getting a trim and unable to poison the water on its masters behalf would be a huge step forward.

Yeah, the problem with the middle east is the only actual democracy there. Righto.

Trouble is, the deep seated issues in Syria/Egypt/Bahrain/Libya et all are so, well, deep seated, that very few westerners really understand the wider situation. A professor and expert on the region once tried to explain some of it to me, and it is like pulling on one end of a rope, without the other end moving at times.

So, on the one hand, it is relatively simplistic to to say send in some bombs because chemical weapons have been used, but on the other hand, that might perversely be what some in the region would actually want to happen.

I do not pretend to know what we should do, or not do for that matter, but it is not a black and white situation at all.

Well they have democracy in Palestine as well. Trouble is, they elected people the US do not like!

They held an election.

Which immediately broke into civil war, once they elected a party who refused to recognise israel and whom israel refused to negotiate with until that changed.

I wouldn't call a single election, which resulted in fighting betwen the two main parties with hundreds killed and two governments being formed, neither of which recognise the other, proof of a working democracy.

Israel a failed state? Have I missed something?

Yes, you missed the scores of UN Resolutions a legitimate state would have adhered to rather than completely ignore and/or flout. That makes it a failed state in the eyes of the international community...or a rogue state, whatever one you prefer.

Nor would I mate, TBH. But that is the problem, (see my post earlier). In essence, the Middle East is by and large a tribal region, with "states" created over the years by outsiders. Tribal regions have never been democratic in the way we know it, never will be.

The only comparable situation I can think of is when Yougoslavia, (a created "State") broke up. Serbs/Bosnians/Muslims all over each other, and now, they have reclaimed/renamed their ancient borders, and kind of rub along ok.

No oil though.........
