Sky and betting

they don't have to be false - even if they turn out true you can guarantee a profit. It's what bookies do all the time...
No but if you're backing the opposite of what they are reporting - Player x not to sign for team y - and you are laying him to sign for team y then you're doing your dough. Unless I'm misunderstanding you.

Just seen this, and a bit naive on betting and stuff. But isnt this a bit like BBC Sport Gossip column being linked to a BBC Betting service?

Sky run the story of reports that Lukaku is going to Bayern. The odds start at 10-1. I bet £100.

The story gathers momentum, more bets are placed and the price falls to 3-1.

At 3-1 I can take £333 in bets by laying with Betfair, before I am in danger of losing money.

If Lukaku goes to Bayern I am evens.

If Lukaku does not go to Bayern then I've won £233

If I only accept £200 worth of bets, I'll win £134 if he goes, and I'll win £100 if he doesn't

Pretty much.

File under legal but immoral.

Profiitable though, I just checked and Sky sold an 80% stake of Skybet for, effectively 800 million ( 600 million in cash and 200 as a loan note ).

Couldn't agree more - ' breaking news' or ' sky sources' give out any old rumour followed by 'odds have been slashed to......' hoping people pile on as a dead cert when they know all along they have made it up!!
Their Sports News App has 'betting advertisements' embedded in many, if not all articles they write including transfer rumours.

Obviously here at GOT we'd like you to bet with Paddy Power, but what are your thoughts on Sky having a betting arm?

Is it right for them to be able to report rumours then take money in via a betting operation?

Is it harmless fun?

....I have an account with Sky. Mind you, I have accounts with Paddy power, Ladbrokes, Betfred and Coral. I don't particularly think there is a conflict of interest with Sky because the transfer market will be minuscule in their operation.

We should have a syndicate with Esk as our 'fund manager'... sure we'd get great returns :)

BBC have a betting documentary of three on at the moment by Coral - the first bookies to let the media in came across the 3part series that finishes next week - It's an eye opener on how they can now not spread the odds in time if a punter is continually winning, like in the first series an average guy worked out a formula , and won constantly thousands online account - guess what they closed his account! Too successfull they had a spread sheet of how he was doing it, and his massive wins at first they halved his odds then after he had virtually done his property up with his winnings they closed it online!
He contacted them to complain they are allowed to do it!
It's in the terms when you join on your online account - I don't bet, but the show is an eye opener to see how Coral work, an no 2 covered the horse racing on the course well worth loading on the I player catch up!
