Sky and betting

I am quite anti-gambling (although I used that PaddyPower Wolfsburg offer for an easy £50!) and I think this is particularly low.

Every organisation with Murdoch at the helm is bent even by industry standards, newspapers, television and now betting.

The Sun
Fox News
Kay Burley
Dodgy betting practices.
The Times has gone down the nick too.

Not that I buy papers now anyway.

It'd definitely morally questionable - but if people fall for it, that's their own fault really.

It's not their fault if a false market is being created though is it?

No, but who decides what is and isn't a false market? I'd argue that betting as a whole is a false market, it is all influenced by rumours, hunches, superstitions - it isn't based on fact. Who says what is and isn't a real 'rumour'? It can't even begin to be regulated in that way.

Well, as in financial markets, you can create "chinese walls" between content and prices. Ideally publishers of content should not be allowed to make markets.

Disagree. There are a million and one ways to influence betting markets, not just via publishing. Betting is in essence a con, you're enticed into placing a bet by good odds, rumours, deals etc - if you place a bet, you place it knowing that you're taking a stab in the dark. You can't legislate to stop people being gullible.

Oh, and I no longer allow permanent Gambling adverts on here after realising how it was becoming impossible to escape gambling adverts everywhere for a football fan.

Binned our rental with Paddy Power for ad space for Thai Brides and that...

There is a way of beating Sky at their own game of course. As a story develops back the "story" at the higher odds. As the odds fall due to the publicity and volume of money attracted to the "story", lay the "story" at shorter odds with Betfair.

Took balls to get shut of Paddy Power ads I bet..

Haha
I was just about to type the same !

The problem ( Skybet's manipulation ) might go away a bit now that Sky only own a minority stake in Skybet. They sold a big chunk to some venture capitalists this year ( I forget exactly who and how much ) and I wouldn't be surprised if they sold the remaining stake some time in the next few years.

Doubtless there'd still be a formal agreement in place to "pool resources" for a while, and even after that, a more informal arrangement, but Skybet's profitability isn't as important to Sky as it was 12 months ago. About the only thing certain is that the name will stay the same for the forseeable.
