As someone said a few weeks ago, if he gets his defending right (and he will improve in this area) he could be something special, he has all the tools. He's tenacious, decent in the tackle, a good footballer and probably unlike Baines, has the ability to carry the ball and do it by himself. As good as Baines is, that's the one thing he lacks.

I think Coleman's weakness as a defender is letting players run into that space inbetween him and the right sided centre back, cutting inside him, so to speak. I've noticed a few wingers bypassing him in this area, even left footed players. As a defender down the byline I think he's fine, he has good recovery pace and is decent in the tackle. His decision making with high balls also needs work, but that's the case with lots of small fullbacks.

I don't think he is ready to be our right back yet, but all I wanted to see was was him involved in some capacity and given his varied attacking game, he could be an option in more advanced positions like the right wing. Whilst he's not as electric as Donovan I've certainly seen him beat more players in one on one positions than the American.

He'd probably have to adapt to reciving the ball with his back to a fullback, that's the main problem for fullbacks who are pushed further forward. You aren't always facing the goal, but saying that, I wouldn't say someone like Aaron Lennon, for example, is a natural in this area either, Tottenham just get him into positions a few times a game where he is effective, and that's all these players need.

Coleman ready/not ready as RB: I think that depends on who the opposition are. Play him against teams you can pretty much expect to get behind the ball and/or have no decent out and out wide man with pace. He stretches the opposition and can usually find a way through. His defensive positioning is poor at the moment, though. I have no faith in him tracking decent opposition pulling off him out wide. Up until we get a specialist RM in he should be played there week in, week out regardless of who the opposition is. When we do get that right sided player in he'll have to develop his all-round game a bit to shift Hibbert from RB. It's down to him and his words today are heartening because he shows he knows it.

I'd avoid another loan of him to lower division teams. There's a danger a player can pick up the mentality they've found their level.

Well done Dave, great summation.

Coleman might not be the best when it comes to defending, although I am sure he would improve with time, but his attacking ability are by far one of the strongest we have available at the moment, and to further his development he must be getting more playing time, whether it would be RB or RM?

And since he is deemed not quite experience enough and defence quality are not quite upto the right standard to start, then the only choice is to start him from RM, while Anichebe is 6 weeks away from being able to train again and probably another 2~3 weeks training before fit enough to start a game again, Coleman is by far the best option we have at the moment for the RM position, and don't tell me Osman is a better option, most Evertonian would tell you he is a joke there, if you must play him it got to be in the middle.

As long as we have some sort of attacking ability on both side, with Arteta direct the floating of our attack I am sure we could get couple goals and win some games and hopfully we start from our next game against Fulham.

what would be perfect for coleman is another player of his caliber (think baines) to play on the right. that way they could just switch from rb to rm whenever each attacks.

the likelihood of that happening, though, is slim to none. hibbert and coleman would work nicely together, same with neville. because both of them defend well and thats about it. so coleman could be free to roam and not worry about getting back in help.
shame that doesnt happen though

Certainly Brentford got a pen that way, and Nolan got in that gap between Coleman and Jagielka last week. I'm not so sure he has got great recovery pace, though. It looks like it takes him a bit of time changing direction and building up speed going the other way. Jagielka and Fellaini stepped across lots of times against Newcastle to spare his blushes. His exuberance at getting forward maybe gets the better of him at the moment.

This is all fine tuning stuff, of course. He's a fine prospect for the coming seasons.

I think he does, looking at one of Berbatov's chances towards the end of the game in the last ten minutes, Man utd broke when we where attacking and Giggs/Park (not sure who it was) had a big head start on Coleman, Coleman's turn and sprint was quick enough to slow the player down and make them try another option, rather of running at one of the centre backs and basically being in a good position to go on there own.

If players are attacking him down the line he is quick enough on the turn to track them and get a block in. Although a lesser team, I remember him continually tracking and stopping AEK Athens left winger in the away game in the group stages. The left winger, although limited, was pretty mobile and direct.

I don't think he's any less off than players like Baines and Hibbert in this area, not brilliant, but good enough, the difference comes down to experience and positional sense, which Coleman will hopefully get the more he plays.

Fair enough.

I think most of you have said it already. The lad needs games at this level or he'll never progress. He's only going to iron out the rough defensive spots by playing alongside the likes of Jagielka and Neville who've played in every defensive position on the pitch between them. As for going foreward, he's created chances every time I've seen him, which is more than can be said for most who've played down the right

Has to play on the wing. He's been our best attacking threat in the minutes he's played so far. I'm amazed Moyes hasn't given him a shot there considering how little our options are on that side.
His crossing is as good if not better than anyone else in the team, so surely he's worth a shot.

Him at RM, Hibbert at RB for the time being.

Sorted.

Were running out of saviours quickly though so he best deliver there otherwise Im throwing all my chips in on Saha and Rodwell.

Thank God.

And if Cahill's still injured, then perhaps we should see this team?
