Coleman's Defensive Vow
Seamus Coleman has vowed to improve his all-round game after scoring his first Everton goal.
The Irishman netted in the Carling Cup at Brentford but admitted the result had soured the landmark occasion.

"At the end of the game it didn't mean a lot," he told evertontv. "It was a brilliant feeling at the time but afterwards I wasn't thinking about that."

Coleman also wants to improve defensively: "I look at Tony Hibbert and Phil Neville a lot and if I can pick up things from their games it will help me," he said.

"You very rarely see Tony get beaten by a winger so that is something I can learn from."

Good attitude this lad.

I hope he develop his own game and not try to emulate too much from Hibbert and Neville. He already did what Hibbert can't do for us in 9 years. Score! I'm sure he can get better learning materials from someone else.

He knows his own frailities though. Hibbert's a good role model in learning how to stop a winger in his tracks, that's for sure. I still reckon his best position for now is further up the field but if/when we get a specialist RM in he'd have to look for a RB berth.

If Seamus could learn Hibbo's defensive nouse, then he'd be a better RB just defensively speaking, because Coleman's got some real pace. And then when you factor in his attacking strengths... *drools*

I see him like Bainsey when he first joined he will need a year or so to develop.

Good point that. Bainsey was very 'short' when he arrived (although I dont think he's as confident as Coleman, so their development wont neccessarily mirror each others). If Coleman can eventually match the balance in Baines' game we're in very good shape.

Personally, I would have kept the lad out on loan at Blackpool for another season. The experience would have done him and us a massive favour for next season. He's a good attacking RB but as already stated he lacks defensive nouse and for that reason he is not good enough to start infront of Hibbert or Neville seasoned pro's.

Hibbert is limited don't get me wrong, but he does his job and he's a much better defender than Seamus. Its easy to pick out Hibbert as a scapegoat all the time. Yes he's the weakest footballer technically in the squad but hes also one of the most consistant and I think thats the reason why he has been at the club for so long.

Unless Coleman gets game time how will he learn?

Baines had far more Premiership experience than Coleman.

Baines got that because he was played which is what Coleman needs now.

I think, that perhaps he does need to be loaned out.

The defensive side of his game is not ready, so therefore we dont play him, so therefore he doesny learn. Catch-22

A loan spell would help that problem probably.

Exactly as I said!!, we should have sent him back to Blackpool to get a full seasons Premiership EXP

The simple fact is he aint ready yet and the less people go on about him being the answer to our poor start the better. Its not that position where we aint achieving its upfront and at times the central defensive partnership. I thought Jagielkas distribution against Newcastle was absolutely shocking for an England centre half. Distin, well I don't know if he is coming or going at times! The strikeforce needs to be sorted though. Just throw Cahill up there in my opinion because no1 else is a threat at the minute!

Coleman ready/not ready as RB: I think that depends on who the opposition are. Play him against teams you can pretty much expect to get behind the ball and/or have no decent out and out wide man with pace. He stretches the opposition and can usually find a way through. His defensive positioning is poor at the moment, though. I have no faith in him tracking decent opposition pulling off him out wide. Up until we get a specialist RM in he should be played there week in, week out regardless of who the opposition is. When we do get that right sided player in he'll have to develop his all-round game a bit to shift Hibbert from RB. It's down to him and his words today are heartening because he shows he knows it.

I'd avoid another loan of him to lower division teams. There's a danger a player can pick up the mentality they've found their level.
