Do they not have a mid season break each year, what with confed cup etc as well??
Not really -- until recently, the vast majority of teams did not played their matches at facilities they did not control where they were secondary tenants to an American football side. For scheduling reasons, they couldn't afford a mid-season break, because they were going to lose available match days at the end of the season.
Those days are blessedly gone (almost -- DAMN YOU, Kraft!!!)... the 2 remaining teams (Seattle and New England) ground-sharing with an American football side are not bleeding money on rent since in both cases there's common ownership of the grounds, American football team, and soccer team.
Hopefully, the U.S. schedule will gradually align with something like the Scandanavian leagues, with a long winter break, and for much the same reasons. It's too damned cold, windy, and snowy to play anything resembling soccer in January and February in the northern U.S. and Canada.
