Welcome to the site! Plenty of us Americans flocked to this site right when LD was announced to come to Everton, so your theory is correct. It has also already been discussed here in this ridiculous 99 page thread The article you're referring to was posted just in the last page or two I believe.

Not to be taken too seriously, but Alexi Lalas did say during the USMNT friendly against the Netherlands yesterday that Donovan's stellar performance for Everton just opened the eyes of many European clubs. He said while he's confident Landon will return to the MLS, he says after the WC the sky's the limit for Landon.

Lalas just said he thinks Landon will have plenty of suitors. I'm just hoping that Everton is one of those suitors, and Donovan picks Everton due to his comfort zone here.
