Sir Landon Of Donovan

I never know what to make of Don Garber. Apparently there is some controversy right now over the MLS Best XI. I'm not sure if it's been posted about on here so I'll summarize. Basically MLS coaches and general managers voted and didn't include Donovan. The Galaxy submitted him as a forward (only two can be selected, and voters chose Edson Buddle and Chris Wondolowski). So Garber took it upon himself to cut one of the midfielders who had been chosen and put Donovan in the Best XI in his place. Said midfielder has not been named. So I think some people feel that this is very, very wrong on Garber's part (Donovan of course can't be blamed as he had nothing to do with it).

Garber is a shady dude and some of his public comments about LD's career have struck me the wrong way.

Do people really care about a best XI that much?

Seems an odd thing to fuss about.

It wasn't Beckham was it?!

I don't think the point is that it's *only* the Best XI and no one really cares. But I can see how Garber pulling strings for one player in particular (who he's decided is the Face of the League) would rub people the wrong way.

The point is (IMHO), why even bother with a vote if Garber is going to manipulate the results as he sees fit?

I'm editing this to add, just like Garber can't let the Face of the MLS be excluded from the Best XI, I feel like he's going to try to block any transfer of the Face from leaving the league. As much as he insists it's a club decision, I don't buy it at all. I think he has his claws in Donovan and if a deal with Everton falls through, I'm blaming him.

Garber never says anything to the press that isn't calculated to promote his brand--not so sure I'd call it shady (unless of course you make the argument that good marketing is naturally shady, which I might find some sympathy for). On the whole, though, if you've followed the league from the dark days of Logan, it's pretty hard to argue with Garber's rather remarkable success with MLS. Even the most die-hard supporters believed that the chances of the league surviving beyond 5 years was iffy at best. When Garber took over, it looked even worse than that.

NelsforBlues - I saw your post, and then it went away (are you editing it?), but you are not the only one who hopes LCAB is okay. I hope he's on vacation. :) I left a note for him on his page saying pretty much the same.

Also, your assessment of the Best XI is correct - LD had more votes than the next midfielder and played midfielder 50% of the time this year (and had more success with his 16 assists), so I don't think anyone minded when he booted whoever else was #5. (Except whoever that #5 might have been).

Although fair point ldfan about 1 person being able to change the vote.

I think players have in their contracts rewards for being selected in the Best XI, so I think it matters monetarily...

Thread in the Ale House reports it's his computer that went on vacation.
GOT needs to start a fundraiser.... not the same place without lcab

Cant tim howard have a word?
We need him back, its imperative to our season that we bring in a player with pace and attacking intent to spark up the team.

Haha, yeah, I was editing my post, then just decided to forget it.

Very glad to hear that lcab is okay, though. I'll stop worrying about him now.

Apparently he already has since he's been telling people at Goodison that LD will be back...

The legend of LCAB is spreading...
Taken from a University of Georgia College Football message board I post on...

-Vineyard, you an Everton man? COYB!
Sitting here in my Everton third kit, with Baines on the back, typing away! I am hoping to get to Goodison for a fixture next year. Do you think Landon Donovan is heading back to being a blue next year? I think so.

-Affirmative, sir!
Man, I wish Donovan would be back, but he’s too valuable to MLS. Everton would have to seriously overpay to get him back, and if there’s one thing Everton is known for not doing, it’s overpaying for a player.

Nice to know I have an Everton compatriot here! We can gang up on DavetheDawg and his wife later(A Man U fan). :-)

-Sounds good. Toffee blue for all my friends...
Oh and by the way, I have it on good authority that Donovan is coming back. At first, it is on a loan, then a permanent deal later in the summer. He needs to leave MLS and compete in the Prem, and then back to MLS for a curtain call. LD is the best US player of the modern era and needs to be on display in Europe.

-100% agree.
I hope you’re right, my friend. We could have used him so far this year, that’s for sure.

Little Curly Alan Ball, the most informed Toffee of All!
The good authority I listed above, LCAB, who posts on the Everton board I read daily is the oracle for all things Everton, and he says that Donovan will be back. LCAB must be somehow connected symbiotically with the club or something, because he is never wrong. The man is bad ass. LCAB even knows when Saha has been in the leeches. He sees all, oracle of the toffees, LC Alan Ball!
