Single malts

I read it holiday last year. I don't know much about single malts, but I found it really interesting

One bit that stuck out to me was it mentioned how the Japanese are really getting into whisky and are buying up lots of Scottish distileries (And actually treating the process with more love and appreciation that some of the Scottish companies do)

Went to the Glenkinchie distillery today. If when you go to a distillery, you sign up as a Friend of Malt (free of charge) you can then get free entrance to the 13 distilleries in the book. Great tour, quite different from the Oban tour.

I ended up buying a bottle of their Distillers edition. Mmmm nice.
 
Love Jamesons.
not keen on the peaty flavours and don't like the smokey flavoured whisky at all.
just a drop of water.
for those who want cold whisky without ice cubes, buy the stone cubes that you freeze and add to the glass.
cooling the whisky without adulterating the flavour with too much water.

is there anything similar to the jamesons, i.e. not smoked.
i've tried quite a few of the islay malts and found them too strong in flavour.
haven't tried a speyside since i lived there and overdid the glenfiddich once or twice.

I always recommend Bunnahabhain for beginners, or people wanting to re-discover malts. While it is an Islay malt, it's the only one from that island that isn't peated so there is no trace of smoke.

Good advice about the stone cubes and not adding too much water.
 
Bunnahabhain is a very easy drink, very nice but a touch pricey (if that matters to you).

I tend to keep my eyes out for bargains for my everyday drink and then buy a more expensive bottle as a treat. Costco had Glenlivet 12yo at £17 the other day and £20 in Tesco.

In fact Tesco have some really good offers and the standout buys from me would be in order:-

Balvenie Double Wood £25 (Just buy it)
Highland Park £25
Taliskers £25 (this one might be a touch too smokey or you)
Arberlour £20 or £18 in ASDA Which is ridiculously cheap for a decent Speysider

Waitrose also have some decent offers on bottles I've not tried yet so perhaps Groucho could voucho.

Glenfarclas 12yo £31
Springbank 10yo £28
Old Pultneney £24.50

I know you don't like Peaty ones but for everyone else Laphroaig's Quarter Cask at £28.50 also from Waitrose is a must buy
 

In answer to Groucho, yes Friends of the malt is bloody brilliant. I guess there M.O. would be, give these a free tour as they're bound to buy a bottle anyway. We are going to try and finish the book, we love Scotland and go every year so it just means more whisky and some free days out.

These are all excellent prices for the malts mentioned. Some places are selling Old Pulteney for £20 at the mo. That really is cheap as chips, bargain hunters.
 
Was given a bottle of Glenfarclas 105 and some nosing glasses for my birthday the other week. Definitely my favourite whisky tried so far although I do really like the Balvenie double wood as well. The 105 is cask strength and you can actually feel it evaporating off your tongue, probably best with a drop of water! Used to always have ice in my whisky but was told off at a tasting and since then have left it out, makes a massive difference to the taste. Also was really surprised how much better it tastes from the nosing glass instead of a tumbler, turned into a bit of a whisky nerd recently!
