When we won the league in 1987 after Luton at home,we were in The Winslow after the games,Sharp and Stevens both came in after the game, free champaign was going round the pub,I chatted to Bobby Robson outside and telling him that it was a joke Chris Waddle was keeping Trevor Steven out of the England side, walking back to the station we stopped at every pub The Carrisbrooke,The Tramway and the one Ronnie Whelan owned towards Kirkdale station and every single one had a party going on with free champaign,15 years old and absolutely sozzled and it didn't cost me a penny
The Sportsmans I think

In my lifetime ...

FA Cup x3
League x4
Cup Winners Cup
Charity Shield x6

Rotterdam was out of this world, but for those with less years than me, the Gosling cup winner atmosphere and the shoot out win over Manure atmosphere are probably the closest to actually wining a trophy.

Can't remember details but I ended up in the park end standing for the QPR game... didn't realise you were well below pitch level in that bit. I remember some ole fella being carted off n front of us and some lad saying' 'throw us a wallet mate' great day ....I remember Gary bannister hitting the post before Sharpy's trademark looping header sealing the win.
been everywhere in gp bar the old park end standing, been in the old park end seats but never the terracing!

I was in the Park End that day too. It was panic stations that we'd get in anywhere - it was thronging outside and we'd travelled 140 miles - until we caught wind of getting in in the Park End. Seemed a bit alien but we were in! What a day.

I'm going to take you all back to 19th May 1984.

We were overwhelming favourites, we went to Wembley to win, Watford went for a day out. At the time we had won nothing for 14 years since that wonderful team in 1970 had won the League by 9 points and worse we'd had to watch the RS win everything before them in that time.

To be honest, other than the goals I don't remember a huge amount of the game. Complete bedlam at the final whistle of course. Then the strangest thing happened between the Final whistle and Kevin Ratcliffe lifted the Cup. It was like time stood still. As the Blues climbed the steps everyone around me, me included are shouting "come on" as if those final seconds before lifting the Cup were the most unbearable of the 14 years that had preceded the moment.

Then the moment when Ratcliffe is handed the Cup, it went quiet, he paused and then lifts it - the whole place erupted, great scenes, the relief, the ecstasy, grown men crying, hugging strangers, leaping up and down, shouting complete nonsense.

Of course, we had several more occasions like that in the 80's and in 95, but nothing was ever like 84 for me. I'm only hoping our next trophy after considerably longer will be even better.

The first trophy I saw us win, I left tears on the terraces that day, happy ones. I feel sorry for the lads who've yet to experience such a thing. I guarantee, it's well worth the wait.

Memories......

First game as a season ticket holder (as a young kid) was August 1986 vs Nottingham Forest. There was a minutes silence held before the game for the late Stanley Rous (remember the Rous Cup?). The Forest fans wrecked the silence by whistling, prompting the EFC fans to boo them, causing the ref to cut the tribute short. Bad press all round afterwards. We won 2-0 if I recall correct.

I remember the dip in form in October, when we had loads of injuries. Then one by one, all the stars starting returning to action. Paul Power turned out to be one of the signings of the season. We had an absolutely boss Christmas period where we just smashed a bunch of teams and we all started believing that we'd win the league.

We had a couple of cup exits, out of the league cup to the RS, and then out of the FA Cup to Wimbledon live on tv (our first FA Cup defeat before the final since 1983). Still got photos of that with me and little brother watching on tv, all dressed up with our EFC hats and flags as kids.

Snodin snubbed the reds and that gave us all a boost, and was great banter at school with all the Kopites.

Then we hit the ground running in March and April.

I remember we smashed West Ham 4-0 on Grand National day, and the game was played at Goodison on a Saturday morning with a 11:30am kick off. For some reason I always remember that:

We lost the derby 1-3 at Anfield (Sheedy v-sign), then could have won the league the following week at home to soon to be relegated Man City. In typical EFC fashion, we drew 0-0. Boos all round. See, even when we were boss nothing was ever straight forward!

Then we won the league at Norwich (I was at Chester Zoo that day and celebrated in the car on the way home after listening to the radio commentary).

The following week was boss. The game vs Luton and title celebration. Luton came to spoil the party and kicked the absolute proverbial out of us. We still won 3-1 though, cos we were boss. Then we had the title celebration and lap of honour, with the 2 league title trophies, the traditional league trophy (not used for 3 years), and the Today Newspaper's crappy glass paperweight trophy. Best lap of honour ever.

Think we played Tottenham at home 2 days later to round off the season and won 1-0, Mountfield scoring. Very fitting, as Watson had been keeping him out of the side and Mountfield had been making noises about moving.

Wow some memories there mate, the forest game was on my birthday it was as you say 2-0, the blip was three straight defeats I think spurs away, arsenal at home and crystal palace away, jim Melrose scoring a hatrick but I remember the crimbo period,we were just unplayable Wimbledon 3-0,Newcastle away 4-0 Leicester at home 5-1 we were flying,I think Aston villa away was the best game that season,we must have had more fans in the ground than them,we had the usual witton lane terrace and the whole of the stand at the side and sheedy scoring the only goal,we were talking about winning the league at the pit on the way home on the amberline coach(remember them?) beating arsenal away the same day the rs lost 2-1 at home to Wimbledon, what a season

Ha, Jim Melrose, that's a blast from the past. Obviously as a kid I didn't go to any aways, but would always listen to Radio City's 2nd half commentary (another funny thing, they could never do commentary for the full game in those days for contractual reasons - bizarre!) and I remember cursing that name!

I am going to be proper arl arse here.
I have been at most of the games that counted (picking up the silver)
1963 League
1966 FA Cup
1970 League
1984 FA cup
1985 League and Cup Winners Cup
1987 League
1995 FA Cup

Younger blues shouldn't worry, it's swings and roundabouts, we will get back again, it will be all the sweeter next time around.
