Memories......
First game as a season ticket holder (as a young kid) was August 1986 vs Nottingham Forest. There was a minutes silence held before the game for the late Stanley Rous (remember the Rous Cup?). The Forest fans wrecked the silence by whistling, promoting the EFC fans to boo them, causing the ref to cut the tribute short. Bad press all round afterwards. We won 2-0 if I recall correct.
I remember the dip in form in October, when we had loads of injuries. Then one by one, all the stars starting returning to action. Paul Power turned out to be one of the signings of the season. We had an absolutely boss Christmas period where we just smashed a bunch of teams and we all started believing that we'd win the league.
We had a couple of cup exits, out of the league cup to the RS, and then out of the FA Cup to Wimbledon live on tv (our first FA Cup defeat before the final since 1983). Still got photos of that with me and little brother watching on tv, all dressed up with our EFC hats and flags as kids.
Snodin snubbed the reds and that gave us all a boost, and was great banter at school with all the Kopites.
Then we hit the ground running in March and April.
I remember we smashed West Ham 4-0 on Grand National day, and the game was played at Goodison on a Saturday morning with a 11:30am kick off. For some reason I always remember that:
We lost the derby 1-3 at Anfield (Sheedy v-sign), then could have won the league the following week at home to soon to be relegated Man City. In typical EFC fashion, we drew 0-0. Boos all round. See, even when we were boss nothing was ever straight forward!
Then we won the league at Norwich (I was at Chester Zoo that day and celebrated in the car on the way home after listening to the radio commentary).
The following week was boss. The game vs Luton and title celebration. Luton came to spoil the party and kicked the absolute proverbial out of us. We still 3-1 though, cos we were boss. Then we had the title celebration and lap of honour, with the 2 league title trophies, the traditional league trophy (not used for 3 years), and the Today Newspaper's crappy glass paperweight trophy. Best lap of honour ever.
Think we played Tottenham at home 2 days later to round off the season and won 1-0, Mountfield scoring. Very fitting, as Watson had been keeping him out of the side and Mountfield had been making noises about moving.
