Es war die wohl schwerste Entscheidung seiner bisherigen Karriere. Doch als Profi in England zu spielen - davon hatte Shkodran Mustafi immer geträumt. Und schien dieser Traum auch noch so weit weg, wird er nun im kommenden Sommer Realität. Denn plötzlich ging für den B-Jugendlichen des HSV alles blitzschnell, die sportlichen Ereignisse im letzten Jahr überschlugen sich förmlich: erst die Berufung in die deutsche Jugendnationalmannschaft, dann herausragende Einsätze bei den HSV-A-Junioren und das Interesse internationaler Topvereine. Shkodran Mustafis Weg führte rasant nach oben.
So kann sich das 17-jährige Abwehrtalent schon jetzt seinen Kindheitstraum erfüllen. Im Sommer zieht er auf die Insel. Beim Auftritt der U-17-Nationalmannschaft in Schottland spielte er sich in die Notizbücher englischer Klubs: Newcastle United, Manchester City und besonders der FC Everton zeigten Interesse an dem gebürtigen Hessen. Auch der HSV wollte ihn langfristig binden, an den Profibereich heranführen.
Der Knackpunkt: Mustafis HSV-Vertrag läuft im Sommer aus. Und zu überzeugend war die Perspektive bei Everton, zu gut auch das Angebot. "Wir haben uns wirklich bemüht, dass er bei uns bleibt", erklärte Jens Todt, Leiter des HSV-Nachwuchsleistungszentrums, "aber bei englischen Klubs können und wollen wir finanziell nicht mithalten."
Leicht gemacht hat sich Mustafi die Entscheidung nicht. "Es ist ein entscheidender Schritt für meine Karriere", weiß er und sagt: "Ich habe mich ein bisschen auf mein Gefühl verlassen." Sein Gefühl brachte ihn schon 2006 zum HSV - offenbar ein guter Ratgeber. Einen Profivertrag über drei Jahre hat er in Everton unterschrieben.

After he was called up for the German national youth team and played very well in the the HSV U-18 he started to attract interest from Top clubs in Europe, most notably England. Newcastle United, Manchester City and Everton declared their interest and also HSV wanted to sign him on a professional contract. However, as Mustafi's contract runs out in the summer, HSV couldn't match the same terms as Everton and had to admit defeat in their attempt to keep hold of their most promising prospect.

Jens Todt the director of HSV's youth academy declared: "we really wanted to keep hold of Mustafi, but we simply can't and won't be forced in keeping up with Premiership clubs."

It wasn't an easy decision for Mustafi. "It was a very important decision regarding my future and I probably followed my feelings in the end."
