Shane Duffy

I think some people forget 12 months ago a lot of people were saying Distin and Jags will still just wanna play hoofball and will struggle with Martinez's passing game. Neither were really known for their passing games but both had no problems playing a passing game and playing it out of defence.

Passing is something that can be worked on, if he works hard enough on it and Martinez puts some extra time into it I don't think we need to have any worries on it.

His height is a real asset and the defensive side of his game is fine, no one can dispute that. My concerns is whether he's quick and agile enough to be able to become a quality Premier League defender, he's got to be able to stop players like Augero and Suarez. If he can prove his quick and agile enough then I believe he'll make a good Premier League defender.

Next season is going to be a really big one for Shane, he's finally going to get his chance. Distin and Alcarez both have a year left on their contracts and are ageing so there is a real opportunity for him to become a very important part of the team. I really hope he can make it, he's been around for a while now and has been working very hard so I'd be great to see him become a quality player, especially considering he came through the academy.

Shane becomes the 25th full international player on our books (last season) - a staggering number. Well done lad!!

Baines, Gibson, Heitinga, Jagielka, Jelavic, McGeady, Oviedo, Kone, Deulofeu, Mirallas, Naismith, McCarthy, Lukaku, Barry, Barkley, Osman, Pienaar, Coleman, Howard, Stones, Traore, Alcaraz, Duffy, Fellaini, Anichebe

wow, good stuff that, and apparently we have no depth.

(suppose 8 are no longer here)

Sunday Times ratings:

Forde 5
Kelly 5
Keogh 5
Shane Duffy 6 - "A solid debut for the Derryman at the heart of Ireland's makeshift defence, but too early to judge the Everton player yet".
Wilson 5
Pilkington 5
Whelan 6
Green 5
Quinn 5
Doyle 6
Keane 4

So joint best rated player with Whelan and Doyle on his debut.

Obviously pretty tough markers at The Times!

Looking forward to seeing Shane Duffy getting his chance at Everton next season. Obviously not seen much of the lad,but always exciting to see a product of our own youth academy breaking through.

Don't know if he's good enough, but Roberto surely seems to rate him. Another thing I like about our gaffer. A lot of his focus seems to be directed at the academy. Could save us a fortune in the future. Under Moyes I think the academy got neglected as he probably was afraid to put his trust into youngsters.

He's not good enough. That's no shame, to be the quality to play in a top team challanging for CL requires special players. He's not that, I'm sure he'll have a good career, perhaps similar in standing to Dunne. Which again is a fantastic achievement.

Anyone who gets anywhere near our first team is labeled as the next big thing and it is taken for granted they only need to be given a chance and they will be brilliant. Very few will make the step up as we'v seen.

Good luck to the lad. If I were him him I'd leave Everton and go and make a name for himself, start his career and be part of a team/club (not a loan).

So you're saying that if he has a similar career to Richard Dunne then you wouldn't want him at the club?? At his peak Dunne was regularly one of the best centre halves in the prem, think he was city's player of the year 4 years in a row and was an absolute colossus for the Republic............lets not get ahead of ourselves, we're not that good

Just hope he gets

a chance to prove himself next season. Maybe we'll go 3 at the back with him, Jags and Stones?

Certainly has a lot better chance of having a successful career with Ireland than he has with Everton.

We are blessed with some truly awful centre halves at the moment.
