Shane Duffy

If we are prepared to give him a chance then we need to get him signed an extension to his contract first. Give him a few chances ahead of Alcaraz to see if he is up for it.

We will play between 44 and 60 games this season we will need 5 centre backs so Duffy is required and I expect him to play between 10 and 20 games. Distin will be phased out and Alcaraz is injury prone so I expect neithers contract to be renewed at end of season and this will mean Duffy will get more opportunities the season after. We should keep him as he and Stones could be a pairing for years and save us a fortune!

With him, Stones and Browning all around the first team squad, we have the potential to really bed in our central defence for a long time. With all of our senior defenders the wrong side of 30 it was something of an issue, but it seems as though we might be able to do it all from the academy. It will be fascinating to see how Martinez uses Duffy and Browning this season.

Watched Duffy live last night. He played well, good on the lad. His distribution and confidence on the ball have improved significantly since I saw him last two years ago. He looked more comfortable with the ball at his feet than either Jagielka or Distin but not as much as Stones or Alcaraz.

Still very strong in the air and great at getting a block in. Positioning looked fine. Never going to be the fastest.

If an English centre half had made that debut last night, there would be a big fuss in the guardian about him today.

He will be a quality premier league defender by his mid 20s

Hes the best understudy weve got, shouldnt sell without better coming in. Id like to see him loaned to a premier league team, maybe one of the new teams, and see how he does then decide at Christmas.

I'd rather he was ahead of Alcaraz in the pecking order. He got karate kicked in the liver and he's still less injury prone, plus he's got the potential to actually be around our club for 10 more years. I say keep him and slowly introduce him, cups etc. Not everyone makes it straight away, the lad is a late bloomer.

Shane becomes the 25th full international player on our books (last season) - a staggering number. Well done lad!!

Baines, Gibson, Heitinga, Jagielka, Jelavic, McGeady, Oviedo, Kone, Deulofeu, Mirallas, Naismith, McCarthy, Lukaku, Barry, Barkley, Osman, Pienaar, Coleman, Howard, Stones, Traore, Alcaraz, Duffy, Fellaini, Anichebe

Doesn't he only have a year or two left? My plan for Duffy: I would sign him to an extension (shouldn't be that expensive) and play him mostly in our cup games and possibly meaningless Europa games at the beginning of the season. If we are knocked out early I would look to loan him out to a bottom PL team for the rest of the season or do this from the start if Bobby is comfortable with our CB cover. Give him a full season of facing PL opposition and let him grow. I know he is not ideal but his size and dominance in the air is something we are lacking and when in our line up he will be surrounded by McCarthy, Stones and Baines who can carry the load of distribution.

I wonder is that a record?
