Bans for Phil Neville derby charge fans
Apr 18 2008 by Ben Turner, Liverpool Echo

LIVERPOOL fans accused of abusing Phil Neville were banned from football matches while their case goes through court.

The two Reds supporters face charges they abused the Everton captain during last month’s Merseyside derby.

Michael Anthony Blackmore, 48, of Dundale Road, Old Swan, and Ian Golder, 39, of Haselbeech Crescent, Norris Green, are charged with co mmon assault.

They were arrested after a police investigation into allegations that Everton captain Phil Neville was spat on and punched by fans as he prepared to take a throw-in during the ill-tempered meeting of the red and blue halves of the city.

Blackmore is accused of punching Neville and Golder is accused of spitting at him.

During a two-minute court hearing at the North Liverpool Community Justice Centre yesterday the men, who did not enter pleas, were banned from attending any major football matches before their next court appearance on April 24.

Adjourning the case for a week, Judge David Fletcher said he would use the break in proceedings to analyse footage of the derby captured by CCTV and Sky TV cameras on the day.

And Judge Fletcher paid tribute to the clarity of the technology. He said: “I have seen the CCTV and it is testimony to modern technology that it is the clearest and crispest piece of evidence I have ever seen in a criminal case.

“You can see exactly what people are saying and exactly what people are doing.”

The derby was coloured by unsavoury incidents with players from both sides abused.

As well as claims captain Phil Neville was abused as he prepared to take a throw-in, police also probed reports Anfield skipper Steven Gerrard was the subject of hate-filled chants.

It led to both clubs taking the unprecedented step of calling for calm and an end to the vitriolic chants.

And the pleas were repeated on Tuesday during the 19th anniversary service to remember the 96 victims of Hillsborough.

Blackmore and Golder were bailed until April 24.

Of course they wouldn't.
