In defence last night he went asleep at the back post and handed Moldova two great chances to score; then he serves up a penalty for them when he does intervene to try and defend.

He hasn't got the basics of his position right. Defend first, attack second.

….defending is an art, Dave. It really is something that’s learned. Patterson is only coming out of age restricted football, he’s pitched into international football without playing regularly at club level. As long as he has the physicality to cope defensively, he will develop with experience, particularly playing alongside seasoned professionals.

He‘s making defensive mistakes but they will decrease with time. At this stage of his career to say “he can’t defend, that’s the start and end of the matter” is ludicrous.
