Knives out for Strachan

They could do worse than McInnes as the new manager

If you don't mind can't we just enjoy him being at Aberdeen for a bit longer. Thanks.

As a side note, I saw him (McInnes) yesterday morning at the petrol station all kitted up for taking training. There would be none of that day to day with the national team. As has been said elsewhere he'll go to Rangers eventually, sadly.

The ball started rolling on Strachan's demise once he got that muppet McGhee involved IMO

Mc Ghee what a clown he was /is
Never see his face at Scotland games cos his heads so far up little Gordon's pooper
I'd like to see Deek stay at the Dons for the long term but I remember he said he had unfinished business down south so maybe he will swerve newco
Still to young for the national team IMO

Can anyone explain why the quality of Scottish footballers has declined so much in the last 30 years?

Money is a major issue but not the only one. The people running the game up here prefer to run it down rather than talk it up also. So they are never going to get a decent TV deal because of that.

Why should Sky/BT Sport be giving Scottish football a good deal if they don't promote the game.

I don't think its the only reason. Yes facilities aren't the greatest at a lot of clubs. But improvement in coaching standards could go a long way.

One thing a couple of years back was Ricky Sbracia (spelling) who was U21 coach refused to pick a skillfull young Scottish player who was playing for Real Madrid at the time. Because he didn't think he would fit into the system he had. Thats just nuts IMO. And is systematic of some of the issues in Scottish football.

They wouldn't pick Jordan Rhodes for the big team for the same reason

Well yeah, but despite that, the actual quality of players is a shadow of what I remember from 30 plus years ago. Like the Laws, Dalgishs, Sounesses, Johnson, Gemmill, Gray, plus bundles of other top top players.

Best Scottish player in the last 15 years would be an interesting natter.

Off the top of my head; McCoist (goals anyrate), Nevin (?), dunno. But not a patch on some of the greats from 15 years plus earlier.

One of the things that has stopped the development of players coming through is players getting a few good games at say Aberdeen, Hearts, Dundee United, Hibs etc. And suddenly bigger clubs come fishing. Initially it was Celtic and Rangers in the 90s. They would sign the likes of Derek Riordan and others and not play them. That in itself kills the league. And reduces the quality of player.

Englands top clubs always took the very best in the past. As you say Dalglish, Souness, Gray and many more before that. But a few years ago a player would sign for Fulham, Derby or Middlesbrough etc. The next time you see them they return to Scotland with 2 or 3 league cup games in 3 years and sign for a Championship side in Scotland looking a worse player than before they left. When maybe staying a season or two more would have seen better development for these players.

The best Scottish players now play in the Championship down south or at Hull, Sunderland or Stoke.

But a Law, Dalgish, etc, wouldnt have ended up at Hull. And did get games at the top Scottish clubs.

Like I say, the talent pool seems dry, no matter where they end up playing these days. Sad.

Do you still have the Junior football leagues up there? Ferguson, (Alex) reckoned that system was brilliant for player development and that.

We currently have a fine young prospect in 19 year old Jai Quitongo at Morton who has been attracting scouts from Hearts, Sheff Wed, Brighton and Swansea. However, he has been overlooked for the Scotland u21 squad in favour of a Celtic player we have on a season's long loan who isn't a patch on Jai, but is still effectively a Celtic player. That's what happens unfortunately.

I've heard of him. Supposed to be a good player. Just typical that Scotland would over look a talented player. Hope he stays at Morton for a couple of years and gains experience. If he was to move. Hearts would be a better move for him at this stage. More chance of first team football and contiuned development.

The juniors are still very much there. Though they don't seem to produce many players for the Scottish league system. Many prefer to stsy junior these days!

Just a small point. Denis Law never actually played in Scottish football (something thst surprised me, I was convinced he started out at Aberdeen) he actually He started off at Huddersfield town. Dalglish had about 7 years at Celtic and came through their youth system. Graeme Souness started out at Tynecastle boys club (are/where a feeder club to Hearts before starting his pro career at Tottenham.
