Because he wouldn't have the likes Anderson, Michael Carrick, Owen Hargreaves, Darren Fletcher and Ryan Giggs competing with him at Everton.

Just Arteta, the young but raw Rodwell and a few half decent stop gaps. We need options at the end of the day, it's always handy to have more than one centre midfielder who can pass further than 10 yards.

For one, Giggs? The left mid?

Arteta is better than Flether, Hargreaves and Anderson. Rodwell, young, like Anderson, and better. Carrick is a class act to be fair.

Scholes hasn't got the greatest range of passing in the world. He's not someone who can come on and run his bollocks off to change a game. He's not someone who will make a big challenge for you. He's not someone who would sit back and be able to soak up pressure from a midfield. He's not quick, fast, strong, he's not good in the air.

Why the hell should we waste £40k a week on him just to please Fergie and take a has been off his hands?

Oh he's only gone and won this argument.

So what does he have that has made him a fixture in one of the most succesful teams of all time?

Alot of football these days is about controlling the play. Why do you think Liverpool do so well with Alonso and Maschareno playing so deep but controlling the game and dictating the tempo?

We need a player like Arteta who can dictate the tempo for us and control things in the centre. We need more alternatives, all top teams have different options and different ways to beat a team rather then a couple of options.

In Alonso and Mascherano, your talking about two quality players in their prime.

Alonso - Awesome passing, we all know that. He can tackle as well. The difference is, Liverpool have some one else...

Mascherano - who will tackle all day long for the team.

They go together well, which is why it is a successful pairing.

If you think Scholes and Arteta is the key to our team breaking the top 4, then sign him up Davey!

They're not but it will certainly give us options. We'll be able to dictate the game and play the tempo we want to rather then rely on being direct and percentages (although i'm not saying this isn't sound to have).

We need options, all the best teams do, it's not about bringing him in to play in the 1st eleven all season but about having different playing alternatives.

In a December 2008 interview with The Daily Mirror, he said he planned to retire from football completely in two years. "I think I've got two years left at the most [...] I'm looking forward to finishing and everything that goes with it."

At least hes still hungry, NOT.

I'd love to be able to do that week in week out. I just don't think a 34 year old has been is the right man for the job! (y)

Another waste of 50 odd posts this one - Scholes won't go anywhere (same for G. Neville or Giggs).

Noticed that Chelsea have signed Zhirkov now, so that rumour that Joe Cole may be on the move might have legs, would love to see him here and I'm guessing he'd be a more welcome signing than Scholesey.

Joe Cole would be an excellent signing, a little injury prone these days, but I wouldnt imagine he would settle for £50k a week and im not even discussing his sale price.

You never know about the wages - in a World Cup year, guys like Cole might just be happy to get regular starts, never came across as a publicity hunting, money-grabber to me either (compared to most of his team-mates and those of a similarly high profile at least).

Price could be anything from bugger all to stupidly high, not sure what their policy is down there regarding guys they aren't going to need.
