Do any of them play CM?

Not relevant to the size argument. Size is irrelevant.(Obvious Mum/wife/sister joke opportunity)

Yeah they made it in other leagues but OP said Prem demanded physicality often not associated in Foreign leagues.

My point is if you're good enough size is not an issue. Any coach knows that. Ricky Sbragia not so much but he's a dinosaur.

Size still matters, but it’s how you use your size, and if you have the in-game intelligence to have a plan B and plan C.

That's not quite what I was saying in fairness. Being big or very fast makes it a lot easier to come through the academy in this league and make your mark.

As I've said before, as well as unearthing the odd top talent, a good youth system can also supply a number of players who are just good enough for the first team. This allows what money there is to be spent on problem position or in attack.

Look at ManU and the Class of 92. Yes it produced Beckham, Scholes and Giggs, but it also provided Butt, the Nevilles, Gibson who aren't world talents but they were just good enough for the first team that they didn't have to spend money on those positions. There's a whole raft of players that came through their academy like that, who when they moved on were shown to be not that great, but without them they wouldn't have been able to afford the Van Nistleroys or the Ferdinands. They knew how to play in the same team as each other because they'd been doing for years, but were pretty much lost when that safety net was taken away.

With our limited resources we should also be seeking to maximise this, every kid we can bring through into the first team is a few million less we have to spend on that position that can be spent where it makes a difference, up front.

To be honest some of the kids would have done better this season. Given a run would Ledson really have done worse than Barry? Springthorpe worse than Howard? McCaleny or Long make less of an impact than Kone? Browning worse than Alcaraz?

Had there not been injuries last season Stones may still have not made a senior league start for us. He got the chance though and now he's irreplaceable.

The difference between Everton and foreign teams or a United around 92 is that only the obviously exceptional talents make it. Even then Rooney, Rodwell and Barkley were drip fed first team action often out of position. Players like Butt, the Nevilles, or even Gibson Cleverley or Welbeck would not get a chance at Everton.

Throw these kids in then you will truly see which ones make it and like Spanish teams and German sides you would find more than you expect would step up. Remember when Guardiola ditched Deco Ronaldinho and Marquez and threw Busquets and Pedro straight into the first team? Clearly neither looked exceptional to the previous manager but they got a chance.

There's no way some of the apathetic performances turned out this season would have happened with a team containing more acady graduates.

Springthorpes not even with us anymore,
Mcaleny doesnt play as a striker anymore and longs not there yet,
Agree browning couldve done with a few more games,
Ledson needs a loan first.

And stones defo wouldve made a senior appearance because Roberto loves him

And its a completely different thing putting a kid into a successful team than it is a team struggling, could completely destroy them

This is the reason why I don't think we need a large squad and instead should be looking to lower the numbers and increase the quality.

If worst came to the worst then a kid might get a couple of games. Big deal - Garbutt hasn't done too badly this season. Or Stones last season.

We're coming to a point where the U21s are starting to look at the first team and we shouldn't be blocking their path.

...Let's not get carried away, if one comes through it's a good return, if more than one comes through it will be a major achievement. It's not a question of moving aside and letting the kids come through, it's about which ones have the ability to take that massive step up.

Yep, Alex Young, Alan Ball, Colin Harvey, Bobby Collins just to mention a few small uns.
