With the Russian success in the tournament so far, I really wonder one thing if Russia end up going further. How will this affect soccer/football in the United States? USA didn't even make the WC this year and with all the wealth, resources, the Americans won't be just watching this quietly. Albeit, it's not the Cold War anymore, but USA would definitely want a competitive soccer team in the future. Historically, the Russians succeed in sports like Basketball, Ice Hockey, Athletics, Olympics, all sports that are successful in USA.

What do people think?

Don't think the Russia success will even be a blip on anyone's radar.

Our failure to qualify is by far the driving force for improvement/change. We expect to be there at the very least...usually we have come to expect getting out of the group stage.

I am confident that the mistakes of this cycle will be fixed. Mexico was at death's door for qualifying for 2014, just as we were this time. Mexico had luck go their way, we did not.

I'd be wary to say that Tikki-Takka is finished, because it always seems to come back, but that was a blow for it yesterday

I'd be glad to see the back of it to be honest

It's always felt like a very cynical style of football to me, one based around stopping the opposition playing by hogging possession

That wasn't a Tiki Taka Spanish team though. They knocked loads of ball long, as you;d expect with Costa leading the line. Obvioulsy if a team like Russia get 11 behind the ball you cant do that so the last game is a laborious passing carousel looking for the gap that doesn't come.

Stayed up til midnight. Couldnt bring myself to stay awake for extra time so went to bed. Regardless of the result, it was one hell of a boring game

They didn't knock loads of long balls, and that was the issue

They had 74% possession. You don't have that if you're knocking it long all the time

Russia neutralised Plan A and they weren't capable or willing to go with Plan B

You're looking at one game. The three stage matches they were getting it up to Costa sharpish. It was the antithesis of Tiki Taka.

Tiki Taka was more represented by the Spanish teams that won the two Euros and the WC, not this tripe team just knocked out. I'm not an advocate of the system btw. I just think there's a predictable straw man being set up by the lazy arse English football hacks and some people are falling for it.

Its amazing where a good doping program and the threat of a mass murdering dictator can take you.

Russia are in the quarter finals on merit. They are nowhere near as bad a side, as some people were saying before the tournament. This tournament has been a massive success for Russia. Both on and off the pitch.Croatia will be tough, but i think Russia will just like the match against Spain, be hoping to strangle the life out of them.

Sure they are. And who's betting they won't get caught either.
