Ross Barkley

He has one good game in every 6/7 games. He gets what it means to play for Everton and he tries to hard to be the golden boy that the fans adore. That's his downfall. He constantly wants to be the best, is that a problem? Of course not. However sometimes its easier to do the basic and give the ball earlier or take a shot first team instead of turning a defender left and right four times before having a dig. Sad to see but he's forcing himself out the team.

Agree totally. He doesn't have to be great at 22, but he does have to contribute something positive to justify his place and at the moment I'm not sure he is doing that.

I think that under Martinez he was put under so much pressure to be the main man that it overwhelmed him. He needs that pressure reduced now, by letting him know he isn't indispensable that he can be just good at the moment and that's ok, as long as he keeps developing.
In fairness it has been working OK in the league and personally while I would drop him back eventually I couldn't justify doing that now with the form of both Gueye and Barry and I also don't want to drop him.

Maybe we just need to be cleverer with the games were we pick to play him. Last night Norwich offered nothing. Sunderland offered nothing. They are games were we could play a more attacking lineup and for me that means Barkley further back for Barry and one of our direct players in front. If that means 4-4-2 then fine with Kone and Rom or Deulofeu/Mirallas/Bolasie as a 10. This is why we needed to buy Mata.

Luckily I think it's a moot point for the weekend because I doubt Bournemouth will defend deep so Barkley should have plenty of space and will probably do really well. If he doesn't in this game then he really must have a crisis of confidence.

There are certainly questions over his role as an attacking midfielder, but I do wonder if playing him up front might actually be a better use of his talents - he is big enough, quick enough, and can finish; and he would have less time on the ball (ie: less time to overthink things).
I suggested this a few days ago...and I'm beginning to think it is possibly the only answer as far as Ross is concerned. I think that one thing is certain...Koeman will be after a strong, intelligent midfielder in the January window.

As soon as the lad makes one error, certain idiot members of the crowd moan and groan then shout abuse. Do they not think this gets to the lad? He clearly has confidence issues!
'But he earns thousands per week and if I was on there blah blah blah'. He is still human and open to all the frailties anyone else can suffer from.
He needs to block that out and pretend they aren't there. If that really is a problem then we need to hire a sports psychologist to sort his head out.

I'd argue Deulofeu has been even worse this season.
Only one who looked likely to score last night but because they didn't go in that's what people remember. In 25 mins Mirallas and Bolasie hardly set the world alight and remember Deulofeu has either played without Rom, as CF or as a sub this season.

People need to stop defending him. He's stunk the place out for a good three years now: 11 goals in his past 72 games going back into season 2014/15. One goal in seven good enough for a number 10 midfielder? Jordan Henderson (yes, him!) has a better strike rate than Ross, and he's deemed a terrible midfielder on here by our fans. He couldn't turn it on when Martinez was blowing smoke up his arse for two years telling him how good he is, and now he can't turn it on when he's left to his own devices to motivate himself to play well. For all the "the fans ruin him" - balls to that, Liverpool come to Goodison every year and get dogs abuse all game and still bum us. He needs to grow up, learn to ignore the very small minority that are vocal when he makes mistakes (and it IS a small minority) and start performing, or he WILL be the next Jack Rodwell. For now, he needs taking out of the team as he's become a liability. Deulofeu, Mirallas and Bolasie until one of them loses form or gets injured.
I hate to agree with this but it's the harsh truth.

I think some our "fans" need a sports psychologist after hurling abuse at Barkley from the first minute and then applauding a goal by the opposition. Greatest fans in the world?

2 years of Martinez has completely shot his confidence

He'll come good

So where's the confidence (that a team usually gets as a collective) now Koeman's here?

It's not all about confidence. He (Barkley) looks lost because he's only half aware - not because of any confidence issue. Confidence would mean he passed the ball safe every time to escape the ire of the fans if he got it wrong. He underhit several passes last night, and still ran at into opp. players (as he usually does).

He even ran into one of his own players...But he had the 'confidence' to do that.

But that's the thing he gets the chances but can't score them, countless times has he been put through on goal and just fluffed his lines. I'd say he was easily the worst player last night.

Not one of his best games, but surely he wasn't the worst player. Fifth or sixth worst maybe, behind Del, Funes Mori, Cleverly, Valencia at least.
