Roy Hodgson's Everton snub is a silver lining
Ross Barkley and John Stones breath sigh of relief at Euro snub

Substitutes Kyle Walker, Wayne Rooney, Harry Kane and Ross Barkley sing the national anthem prior to the Group B match against Slovakia.
Just two outfield players failed to play a single minute of England's abject Euro 2016 campaign.

And for that Ross Barkley and John Stones should be eternally grateful.

The humiliation by Iceland – yes, Iceland, the country of 330,000 and whose national sport is handball – will scar the careers of all who were part of it.

The unused Everton duo should be relieved their fingerprints are nowhere near the biggest footballing crime perpetrated on this country for 66 years.

The players involved against Iceland may not have David Beckham style effigies created to taunt them, but the mental scars will still be deep set.

And the hangovers could endure for some time.

Is Anfield's worst, Roy Hodgson, now England's worst?
At least the Everton duo will return to pre-season training with their reputations intact.

Roy Hodgson's refusal to use John Stones was understandable, given the youngster's unconvincing campaign with the Blues, but his decision not to take Phil Jagielka was baffling.

The Everton captain was never going to be used in France, but Barkley could have been.

Against Slovakia, with England toiling to break down a well organised and resilient rearguard, Hodgson reintroduced two players he had chosen to rest.

Wayne Rooney and Dele Alli added nothing new.

Against Iceland, Hodgson opted for the clearly not match-sharp Jack Wilshere.

Barkley was left chewing gum in the dug-out.

Throughout his short England career there has been a suspicion that Ross Barkley's maverick talents weren't trusted by his manager.

But trailing 2-1 to the land of fire and ice, with Wayne Rooney misplacing every pass he attempted and Dele Alli's intelligent runs being largely ignored, Barkley's ability to drive at a defence and pick out a pass would have been useful.

They were ignored.

But rather than grind his teeth in frustration, Barkley should breath a sigh of relief.

Criticised by some of his club's supporters last season, the last thing he needed was to be part of a national calamity.

Every French cloud has a silver lining.

Fuming for him that the likes of Wilshire, Milner and Henderson got game time before him.

Alli, regardless of how good he is and could be, was utter garbage this tournament and should have been left out by Hodgson. Games where crying out for someone of his ability, that will pick the ball up and drive at defences, you could see that last night with Rashford - Wilshire was such a nothing sub - gets the ball in the opposition box and will pass it back to the defensive midfielder in our own half.

Talk about Game management with Martinez, this tournament has shown that he wasn't alone in being utterly terrible.

At least we know he will have a decent level of fitness coming back this preseason.

The turning point for me turning my back on England. The second Wilshire came on last night was it.

For years i've laughed off and excused England picking players for various reasons, but I can't anymore. I can't 'support' a team that does this.

It's not even just Roy. It's the FA as a whole.

I'd like to apologise to everyone i've spoken to about England in the past. You were all right.

Ross Barkley became England's best player last night. Without even kicking a ball.

I was genuinely shocked he didn't get a run all tournament.
Exactly what England were crying out for, anyone who had eyes to see could see it.
Half-fit half crap Wilshere got a run instead.

Mental mate. Just mental.
I feel like I'm the same boat somewhat, late last year we were playing Myanmar in Myanmar on some awful pitch, Sunday league esq.
Played out the most boring draw I've ever seen.
Persisted watching and we scraped through the nations cup playing hoofball by pennos twice.
Outplayed by the mighty giants of New Caledonia and Fiji.

I'd happily swap boats I think.

Keep thinking about Everton. It makes everything easier.

Him and Rashford should have been on at half-time.

At least he'll get a go under the next manager. Nothing improves a reputation quite like not playing.

...because he was an Arsenal player, pure and simple.
The England football team totally lost me this morning (NZ time)...it's a failed, flawed, 'public school' system whereby the club you come from matters more than how you play.
They are risibly deplorable.

The only positive I can see from him and stones going but not playing is that they will have maintained some fitness without the strains of playing.

The game last night and against Slovakia was crying out for Barkley

Unless there's some unknown and meaningful reason for not giving him 10 to 15 mins last night when we needed a different approach to get the equaliser, it was just poor poor management. Stuck with the media darlings of players (e.g. a not match fit Wilshere) and it got us nowhere! Deserved to go out.

Based off last few month's club form barkley was bottom of pile and with good reason, ali was dreadful and should of been took off first 11 after Russia, but that is what happens when you have a clueless manager
