I fully understand your point here as it's completely valid, but brings me to what ive also pointed out - we should've brought valencia on to play tighter to lukaku and provide space for him when he is isolated. Or lookman playing tighter.

Mirallas is supposed to do this but he doesn't/wasn't again today.
Agree again the kid or Valencia not McCarthy

Just don't think McCarthy would have been the answer at any point tonight bar defending a one-goal lead late. I like him but he offers little outside his pressing.
Mccarthy certainly wasn't the 'answer' but he did help in stopping us looking like a pub team against stoke of all teams!

As other posters have put, holgate was being targetted thus the sub was perhaps justified and shows a.proactive koeman.

Not sorting the attacking options on the pitch today however shows the reverse.
Not sure mccarthy should get any minutes in games were we will have equal or superior possession he simply isn't good enough on the ball & whilst he has energy he isn't fit so he can't even impose himself physically on opponents.
Who knows perhaps we make a different sub we lose but for me McCarthy should of been playing for Newcastle tonight would of let him go.

Imo I like.mccarthy for the most part. Offers a similar level of aggression to the others and provides decent enough competition.

If we take europa etc he will be very beneficial if he stays fit.

He didn't play well today but also wasn't gash... he's been playing well the last 4-5 games so a meh performance isn't bad as long as it doesn't continue into a bad 7-8 games like it has done in the past. Looks so much better when Davies plays and finds space and receives the ball in the areas he likes whenever we play 5-3-2

Just looking at a couple of times he hits set pieces - his technique is a bit strange. Rather than one flowing movement he tends to start, make a stutter step then hit the ball. Granted every set piece isn't going to be perfect but you wonder if it's part of the reason we aren't making more of these situations.

Nothing came off for him last night. I'm one of his biggest fans but I can see why managers get frustrated when he has games like that. Just not enough composure with his touch or final ball. Same with Rom though, and when they both start doing that, and Mirallas goes missing, we're utterly toothless.

Hes gonna have these games esp away from home. Don't think the switch back in formation second half helped. But the phase of the game when he was giving the ball away put us under pressure when we were pushing on in the game.

Good post this in hindsight. The formation change actually culled our attack completely really, felt like ross didn't know where he was supposed to be playing (neither did kev etc mind)

I watched the game at home with my mate and said to him after 25mins that the formation needed to change. It worked on one hand as we were less open but it affected us going forward. Rom was isolated and Ross didn't know where to be. Doesn't take away from the fact the 5 and 10 yard passes not finding a shirt but Ross will have them games when his not in full flow.
