Ross Barkley

Yet again, I found the attitude of some people towards Ross in the Park End today was a total embarrassment. After less than two minutes there was a loudmouth in the row behind me telling us all how bad a player Barkley is. When he was tackled unfairly and the ref gave us a free kick he blamed Ross for getting caught in possession. When he started and finished the move for the second goal he announced that Ross might turn into a footballer now that he had been lucky enough to score.
Words fail me.
Ross - you are a star. Ignore some of the morons who pay to sit and criticise you constantly.
Wouldn't surprise me in the least if the "loudmouth" in question is a GOT member. Plenty of Ross bashers on here.

After weeks of slating Ross, I think we may start seeing some more positives, my personal gripe was that he was too arrogant, doing stepovers and feints for no reason. Then against palace and Burnley, although he didn't score, he was doing the basics right such as simple passes and moving the ball quicker. Again against WHU he seemed to be more fluent, better passing, harder workrate and just a better all round display.
Did the Koeman factor play a part in dropping him and having a word ? Seems like it could be the answer.

Koeman highlighting on MOTD that he run more and worked harder defensively today which he did.

His quality has never been in doubt but his lack of defensive work, willingness to track back or get involved in a tussle or 50/50 challenge is glaringly obvious and infuriated the life out of me personally. He's always needed to work on this but Martinez wasnt interested and now its left to Koeman to get that out of him - which he slowly appears to be doing.

As good as it is to see him ping 40 yard passes or score goals, its just as rewarding to see him battle for the ball or sprint 20 yards to track a player.

Couldn't agree more. Looking a much more rounded player under Koeman. With his increased work rate and aggression looking like he can dominate games.

He was good yesterday but what's fantastic is he can be miles better.

The benchmark is away at Swansea a few years ago, when he scored that free kick with no hair. forget the free kick, he was unstoppable that day. I remember him nicking it around an opponent and exploding away from him and thought "this lad is going to be the tits".
Long way to go but shoots of recovery evident.
"And f****** what?!"
Boss that.

Gullit is bang on about Barkley.

He needs to do the basics week in week out and his talent will shine through.

All this Rooney talk is to light a fire under Barkley aswell imo
Interesting on MOTD last night when the presenter asked Gullit if we are too hard on Ross because he's English and whether, back in the day, did Dutch midfield playmakers have the same work ethic we're demanding of him. Ruud dodged it as well as any experienced politician. Wonder why:coffee:.

It's a valid question actually. Are playmakers like Ozil, Payet, Mahrez, & Mata expected to chase round pressing and tackling, or would their teams rather they reserve energy for when they have the ball in offensive situations?.

Moving on from there, lately, and I'm a massive supporter of Ross, I've found myself questioning his abilities as a true number 10. I don't think he has, or ever will have, the guile and vision of somebody like Coutinho or Ozil. Plus I don't think his decision making will improve greatly. The lad is still only 22 so I may be completely wrong in this, but I'm starting to have serious doubts.

But he does have other qualities and physical attributes that are extremely rare, almost unique as an English player. I'm starting to think he may be better employed as a central midfielder, alongside somebody like Gueye, and I've got a feeling this is where Koeman is taking him. To do this Ross does need to embrace the pressing side of his game, and also sort his head out regarding tackles. He appears never to have mentally recovered from his leg break when he was 17.

Big season ahead for Ross I think. I really hope yesterday's performance is a benchmark for the season as when he plays like that we invariably win.

That's a great post mate. You pose the question, answer the question and then subsequently outline the paradox of Barkley succinctly in a post.

I am not sure he will ever have the guile of Ozil, Payet etc and perhaps this is why he can't expect to not have the lack of workrate of a number 10.

At the same time whether he is ready to be a number 8 is debatable. He needs to nail down a role though.

as much as i love ross he does not possess the footballing brain that the like of ozil, silva, mata have. He has great technical qualities, but he will never be the 'playmaker' like those are.

If he can do what he did against west ham regularly it won't matter anyway because we'll still have a top top player on our books.

Just some guesswork here, but I think Ross took it the wrong way when Roberto, and probably Hodgson too, told him to have a lot of 'freedom' to express himself.
It would seem that up until now 'freedom' to him meant free from responsibilities when the other team has the ball. That's why fans got frustrated when he appeared to be idle except for going forward. I know it was only 1 match, but I'd say Koeman has said to him "You have freedom, but freedom to move around the pitch and do what you can and still get stuck in".
He's one of our best passers of the ball, probably our second best striker of the ball and his long balls and footwork can be decisive. He adds the work rate and he'll be a gem.
