I disagree. I understand your point, but Jack Wilshere is tearing it up for Arsenal and England and has been for a few years, and Barkley is meant to be in that calibre.
The reality is that a player of his promise will either be playing regularly for us next year or his agent will be advising him to move to pastures new before his star fades. He'll only reach his potential by playing IMO.
If we're going to be waiting until he's 22-24 before he plays properly then we may as well release him with the Hope Akpan's of this world. He's supposed to be a lot more promising than that, and I don't see what not playing him for three or four whole years is going to do for his development.
David Beckham didn't really break into the United team until he was 20.
Paul Scholes didn't really break into the United team until he was 20.
Steven Gerrard didn't really break into the Liverpool team until he was 19.
Frank Lampard didn't really break into the West Ham team until he was 19.
Crucially none of them suffered a double leg break which set back their development by at least a year (as far as i know). Barkley has only just turned 19, so maybe if he'd not suffered that injury and his progression hadn't been halted he'd be closer to being ready for the big time. Unfortunately that injury did happen and his progress was set back considerably.
There's plenty of time for him before anybody needs to start saying he should move on to get more games, really.
You can't point to somebody like Wilshere and say that Barkley should be like him because they're both very talented. Talent does not translate to being ready for the toughest league in the world.
