Ronald Koeman discussion

Surely it's pretty clear at this point that the first season under Martinez was a happy accident whereby Martinez's penchant for attacking meshed perfectly with a defence that was still solid as a rock from Moyes's time in charge. The fact that we got worse the longer Martinez was there really says it all.

The more RM got his hooks in and imposed his ideas and setup, the more the defence absolutely went to pieces.

But you could argue that Koeman has benefited from inheriting players from Martinez' time here. Most notably Romelu Lukaku who has gone on to become the Premier League's leading goal scorer and is only at the club because of Roberto Martinez.

Agree with your second point though, his attitude towards the defensive side of the game was pathetic.

The biggest stick to beat Koeman with is that he is very meticulous with his moves. He doesn't stay in one place very long, he uses that 'success' to move to the next one. I'd be HUGELY surprised if Barca wound up giving him the job since he really hasn't had any ACTUAL success in the PL.

Saying that, it's a no brainer a Barca legend who is now in management would want to, one day, manage them.

Haven't really got a problem with him saying he wants to manage Barca, he needs to have succes here to prove he can be successful there, if he won us the europa league next year then he's showing them he can handle European competition

He gets what he wants and we're in a better position to attract another decent manager and player's

Like Lukaku, his heart is not in it, and he's biding his time.
Just generally, the ONLY reason why koeman came here in the first place was because we offered him money. If we didn't up his wages and promise him more transfer funds would he have even left Southampton?

By all accounts he has done his job to expectations this season by getting us back in europe, can't ask for much more than that this season.

Exactly.

For him to get the Barcelona job he's going to have to be really good here. Which can only be a good thing for us.

If he leaves us for Barcelona at some point then that would mean we are in a good position, and could quite easily get a decent replacement at that point.

We can't lose.

There isn't a single manager we could have in the game right now who would not leave us for a top club job elsewhere. If we were sitting top of the league every year then a different story, but generally we could recruit anyone and they would choose a top club over us. Same as any of our players, no matter how loyal they are, if Barca put a bid in for them then they would want to leave us.

Every job is a stepping stone to something isn't it? Who here is in the same job since leaving school (unless you've just left, or left to start a wealth business venture)? That's what ambition is. Hopefully he achieves something with us before taking his next pay rise.

I would say its more a 'monitor my progress at Everton' then when/If i achieve something giz a bell.

Unfortunately until we start achieving we will always be a stepping stone for players and managers.

I don't disagree lads, but my point is that when you are a manager of a football club you become sales person no.1 whether you like it or not. I would like to hear him expand on the exciting project and maybe say I've been a part of big clubs before but Everton are something special. Say players would love this environment to work in, it may be all lies but that might attract better players, that will then make his life easier to get eventually snapped up by a club like Barca. (& as a nice side effect make us better!)

It's not like managers sign for life and they have to wait to be poached by a bigger club. Plenty of time to give gushing statements about other teams inbetween jobs.

I just don't think outwardly it looks great when the triple R's all don't seem to be in the here and now. We've improved our position, look to have a bit of cash, got back into Europe, so we should be attractive to players but we seem just as disjointed as ever.
