Catterick was regarded as distant from his players and as a bit of a cold fish by the media but that never stopped him from assembling the best EFC team I have watched (imo) - he also made some decisions which didn't endear him to the fans...the dropping of Alex Young in favour of a young Joe Royle at Blackpool springs to mind, also his decision to play Mike Trebilcock instead of Fred Pickering in the 1966 Cup final (initially and we all know how that turned out...!! ) If Koeman is half as successful I wont be complaining....
You are spot on there, that was the best club side (assuming that you are talking about the 69/70 championship team) that I ever saw and I don't mean the best Everton side, I mean the best. Club side. I still, all these years later, feel privileged to have watched them. The 62/63 side were good but not in the same league as the 69/70 side.
From all I have managed to glean in the years since 'the Cat' died, his players did not necessarily like him, but they all respected him. (If you get a chance take a look at the days of our life sky video in which Joe Royle, Colin Harvey and Howard Kendall are interviewed). For what it is worth, I think that if Koeman decides to stay here for the long haul, he will be as successful as 'the Cat'.
