It's clear that for whatever reason he's still lacking full match fitness and equally appears to be a little low on confidence with regards to finishing.
Some of his play today was quite good as you mention, especially the hold up play, but I think he needs some mentoring and also competition.
The latter will help improve his finishing and potentially increase the pressure upon him.

He wasn't great, but he was a nuisance. Not many players could back into the Stoke back-line and manhandle them the way he did. He just needs to put the pass together and work harder.
He's not fit but he troubled their centre-halves at times.
