Roberto Martinez discussion

My favourite thing about him is his general intelligence, it shines through.

Very true. Clever man in a literal sense too, has a degree in Physiotherapy and a post-grad degree in business management.

The second qualification is great - he knows how to handle people.

Some footy managers are great managers, but they only know football and live in a bubble. Lets be honest, many of them were ex-players, good at footy, but not good at education and 'real world' stuff.

Martinez is well-rounded and that shines through. He's also an optimist too, perhaps sometimes too much for his own good, but for me personally, I rather have someone who was too much of an optimist than too much of a pessimist. Optimism rubs off on people.

Agree with all of this.

That bit in bold, though, Evertonians aren't used to all this optimism after 11 years of "telling it like it is" of Moyes, so it's going to take a bit of getting used to.

He's got such a warm smile.

Roberto's optimism is reflected in his body language -
that rubs off on the team and hopefully eventually on the fans -
passion and intelligence is the most lethal combination and our man Martinez has lots of both.

David Moyes had taken us as far as he could......something we owe him a large debt of gratitude for.
However , with limited resources we needed a new approach, a new style and a new optimism.

For the last couple of seasone under David Moyes I had become disillusioned. We still heard the same lines from him.....we like to give youth a chance(which he clearly didn't in recent seasons).
We don't complain about not having a transfer budget....then constantly moan that Everton can't compete because we don't have a transfer budget.

But most of all it was picking teams set up to get a draw against teams sruggling against relegation, that really annoyed me.

The three substitutes used yesterday were aged 20,20 and 22. David Moyes would never have brought on John Stones to defend the last couple of minutes. It's just a different mentality.

Probably would have been to bring heitinga on for mirallas. An barkley wouldn't have started

As the bubbles floated around his head, Roberto Martinez deftly caught one, changed it's shape completely, gave it some new instructions and sent it back onto the pitch.

Second interview especially is very interesting - he answers all the criticisms of his playing style and how he thinks a goal from open play is far more satisfying than from a set piece. Really interesting.
