Roberto Martinez discussion

Come on mate. Moyes signed Stones, I'm not sure how that can be a point scored for Martinez.

Stones was another fantastic buy from Moyes. Of all the things people can criticise Moyes for, his acumen in the transfer market, particularly with lower league players was remarkable. We can never take that from Moyes, particularly with Stones.

However I am not sure Moyes would have played him that often and I certainly don't think he'd have played him at centre half, never mind allowing him to develop into the player he has become. I think he'd have been our covering right back. I think Stones would have done ok under Moyes but I have my doubts he'd have become a 35 million rated centre back,

I agree that Stones wouldn't have played anywhere near as much under Moyes, but I do believe he would have been used at centre half. I think the pursuit of Manolas and the experiment with Dier show that Moyes was actively seeking a young centre half, and Kevin Reeves mentioned recently that Moyes had initially rejected the idea of signing Stones as he didn't need a right back. He changed his mind after being assured that he would be a centre half.

This comes back to a point i was making last week - that the squad was already being reshaped before Martinez took over, and we shouldn't just write off a few years because a couple of players in the squad were getting older. As far as i'm concerned, sliding backwards down the league is not good enough. I think finishing 8th is acceptable in the current climate, just as I did under Moyes, but to suggest that it is an achievement is just plain wrong.

6th - 8th - who cares? Neither of those positions get us silverware.

Yes 6th is better than 8th, but functionally only because of prize money (and the possibility of European places falling down to 6th). I'd rather we win a cup and finish 10th than finish 6th.

Everton's descending goals should be:
Win the League (unrealistic)
Finish top 4 (slightly more realistic, but not regularly)
Win a Cup.
Finish as high as possible not top 4.

Moyes finishing 6th regularly and Martinez finishing 8th regularly? Meh, both of those miss the important goals. Both are, in a sense, failures. It really doesn't matter who finishes higher it's just asking who failed less badly.

I have hopes Martinez will take us to one or more of the real goals, while accepting that regular CL football is out of our financial reach at current time. And winning the League would require us to unearth a world class player and have everything fall our way AND not have a player slip at a crucial moment.

No mate, the argument was that Martinez's job is harder, so 8th is the equivalent of 6th now.. the counter argument is that's wrong.
Not that 6th or 8th is more/less important. Although you can still get Europe with 6th sometimes, and its nice to not have to worry about the extra couple of mil.

May as well not bother with a January Transfer Window thread after that.

He was pretty adamant nothing major will happen.
It's been pretty clear during his time here that martinez doesn't like spending in January. He's mentioned it a few times that he doesn't believe you can get any value buying then

I think we should sign Fumes More, great player.

He's boss him...
