He's now upset D-Day veterans by leaving a Commemoration event to go and do an interview with ITV to defend claims he's not a liar and it's really 27 point lead Starmer who is on the ropes.

I realise it's a jokey comment but functionally as an internal party matter, no - although they'd have to forgo all that leadership challenge/selection skullduggery that they love so much. Probably find that the King wouldn't get involved in appointing her as PM during the campaign, so you'd end up with a bit of weirdness there as the current PM would be out on his ear regardless, and Mordaunt isn't necessarily keeping her seat so could well need replacing as leader afterwards whatever the affect on polling - and I doubt the electorate would look kindly on a party in such obvious disarray.

Unless by sword-bearing woman you meant the one from Game of Thrones? Labour could counter her by appointing Red Sonja to the leadership. Would make an interesting PMQs as they battle around the Commons.
