Not disagreeing with any of that. Just saying that we've been riding down the same slippery slope. No wonder the conservatives over here have Reagan as a hero, despite Iran-Contra. He looks like a god, in context.

It's not like things are that much better on the other side of the fence. Clinton was extremely effective in domestic politics, and a foreign relations idiot. I want Obama as my press secretary, but not as my president unless he has Rahm Emanuel twisting arms for him. And I never want Rahm Emanuel as my mayor.

I suppose that what I was saying in the above post is that the steps you took to get to Cameron made logical sense at the time, and that in isolation he doesn't look great, but in retrospect the result looks like a trend line rather than merely his fault.

Things worked out much the same here.

I don't know enough about US politicos, so have no concept of the stark raving man men and their immediate circles that've overseen the encyclopedia's of harm delivered there. What I'm frightened of here is labour get a shot and when they don't immediately turn things round the johnsons of this world will be tap dancing in front of busses again, mouthing off about sleaze whilst having a pint, and targeting the latest fad boogieman to rouse the rabble.

Generations of harm done here, will take multiples of the same to work back to put right. It's rather depressing. Many thanks to the 'alright jacks'...

I suppose that what I'm saying is that how bad any politician looks is a function of how we got there, on both sides of the fence. It's not like I'm saying Cameron was good. I'm saying that he was the last one to play by rules we accepted in Western democracies a decade ago.

If this has happened - and I have my doubts that this is any more widespread than the usual idiots - then it really shows how daft it was to try and appease that lot by banging the anti-woke drum. They (the idiots) cannot be bought off; for every time he throws them a bone they will come out demanding tax cuts / migrants thrown back in the sea / benefits cut to layabouts etc etc

Sunak (and the Tories) only hope of recovering this situation now is to govern genuinely well. Compared to his predecessors (and I include May and Cameron in that) he has not been as bad as them, and has at least attempted to recognize that things are not tickety-boo - this schools built of shoddy concrete issue for example has been known about for years, and largely ignored by governments for years. He has been much more pragmatic in terms of foreign policy than his predecessors, too.

I hope that lot end up in the bin at the next election, but if the alternative is the scum around Johnson or Truss then he has my backing.
