Some of the stuff Perez said was true, but his conclusions are wrong.
He is correct that not many watch the Champions League until the later stages, but that is probably because it is all so predictable. It was designed to keep the big clubs in it. There is little chance of a lesser club winning it.
Also, young fans have been disenfranchised by the cost of football in general and Playstations are far more entertaining for the price.
Players wages have sickened us all. They are quite frankly an abomination and put a wedge between clubs and fans.

I think we have probably reached the peak of football revenue and football needs to plan for less.

To secure itself, something has to be done about player wages and agent fees.

Ticket prices have to fall.

The leagues need to be more competitive, so we are not stuck with the same clubs winning year after year.

The closed shop arrangements have to end. They damage the integrity of the competitions.

I think the Champions League needs to be reformed so its only the champions of every European League. Then we have the "Nearly Champions" League which includes the following 3 clubs, then finally the Europa League.

Not enough nights in the week to broadcast all that. Would cause chaos.

Ok so....

Scrap international friendlies - have these all blocked in one period. Nearly Champions & Europa would remain as normal, Champions League would be condensed into similar periods as the friendlies where we play a bunch of games in one go.

We should just reduce numbers in the CL to actual champions. I mean it’s in the name isn’t it. Was never called I Finished 4th League so don’t see why we have so many teams in it. Less teams, shorter format so the boring and inevitable group stage is quicker.

Okay how about this for a complete revamp.

Each season is split into mini-seasons. Domestic, European and International Season. This way we have a break in between every season of about a week or two.

Domestic: August - April
European: May
International: June-July

The European stuff would be based on the season just completed, so it truly is incorporating the form of the team (i.e not an instance like Wolves who have a great season, but then have a sloppy season and Europe just makes it all worse).

Pros? The excitement of competitions don't have a break. How good would it be to not have international breaks etc, and how good would it be to see a Champions League etc completed over the course of a month as opposed to the full season. This also means that we don't have players getting injured mid season due to internationals etc...

Can't really see many cons to be honest.

It’s not about whether they are successful in the CL. That legacy spot makes it even harder and harder for other clubs to become successful for more than a single season.
No it doesn't. It's 2 extra spots for the whole of Europe, added to existing qualifiers. It makes no difference to Everton.

No. There is 4 extra slots for the whole of europe.

2 of which are for clubs that fall outside of automatic qualifying positions. So they could be in the Europa league for instance.

‘Awarded to the two clubs with the highest club coefficients that have not qualified automatically for the Champions League’s league stage, but have qualified either for the Champions League qualification phase or the Europa League/the Europa Conference League (due to start in the 2021/22 season).’

it’s designed purely for when one of the 12 have bad seasons a la Liverpool, Spurs and arsenal this season.

Only for now. If they don't qualify automatically for 2 or 3 years the coefficient changes and they can't qualify at all.

The new proposed CL format is almost just as bad as the ESL. Keeping the bigger clubs in CL if they have a below average season. Again finding a way to make sure no one can overtake them, it stinks to be honest.
It's ridiculous and should be scrapped immediately. No more pandering to these.

Only thing that levels the game out is salary caps.

That would need all of Europe to agree to it though.

Id love to see it myself, I’m old enough to remember John Barnes getting £10k a week off them lot and thinking that was incredible, unimaginable wealth.. our gash players get that now every bloody day !!
