Hmmmm - last year pre-season, many on this board we worried sick about Spurs, Barcodes and City with all their new signings, they had all "improved" their squads beyond what we'd done. Many predictions were that we'd be lucky to finish in the top 8. Don't believe me? Just review threads from a year ago. Yak was a waste of money. So was Jags. We should have bought Nugent / Koumas / Parker / etc.

See, it's not just about splashing cash on high-priced (and frequently over-priced) players, it's about getting the right players in that will improve what you have. And about building a stable nucleus that only needs a couple of pieces replaced or upgraded each season. We have done that better than any of the pretenders to 5th place, and only Villa come close in that respect.

I'm far more interested in what we do to incrementally build on what is already a decent (but too small) squad, and have zero interest in what the other so-called contenders are splashing their cash on.

if we make 4 or 5 signings in the next couple of weeks and it turns out they have been moyes select priorities for the summer in terms of acquisitions, imagine how much money the club saved not having to pay their wages for the past 2 months.

financial tightrope people, dont go forgetting.

Very good post and I agree wholeheartedly! (y)

Top post! First was Boss as well, Suits you speak the truth my firend unfortunately! (y)

Last year we brought in Jagielka, Baines and the Yak. Jags was from Sheff Utd, no one knew if he would turn out to be our DM and certainly no one thought he'd become such a solid defender for us. Baines didnt play much, but we know hes quite good. And as for the Yak, half the supporters thought he'd just be a lazy [Poor language removed] and a bad buy for his price.

Those 3 players werent thought of as 'world class' players, but my god, Jags and Yak have been incredible for us. Moyes just has to bring in a few new faces and the expectation, from everyone, should be that those signings will contribute more than we think to our squad, big name or no big name.

I personally like it when DM shops at ALDI rather than tescos his success at signing and getting the best out of players that come from lower down the food chain has been one of his strengths

So would it bother me if we didnt sign moutinho or love? no to be honest, what would bother me was if we dont sign anyone

There are bargains still to be had and when DM puts his mind to it he does find them.

& think of the points we'll inveitably drop in the meantime while fitting square pegs into round holes from a squad of TEN senior players. Also, the inevitable pressure cooker 1st team introduction to greet Baxter, Rodwell & Gosling who will now surely feature over the coming weeks. A far from ideal scenario. Forget about blooding in these kids slowly. There is now HUGE pressure on 17 & 18 year olds to perform.

Don't forget, even if new signings do arrive, it would seriously damage the organisation of the side to throw 3 or 4 unsettled arrivals straight into the team.

This summer has been a retarded folly of the highest order in every possible respect & surely only a namby pamby deluded fool desperate to airbrush their own reality could possibly think otherwise.

I repeat, TEN senior players to choose from.

i'm normally not for all the doom and gloom but you're spot on

basically the only way we'll be decent this term is if one of these kids turns out to be the next wayne rooney, and that'll almost certainly not happen because of all the pressure on them to be the next wayne rooney

its early tuesday morning on your side of the pond, there's no time left, now i'd say the best case scenario is we sign 3-4 new players in the next few days, let a couple get substitute appearances against blackburn late on and hopefully manage a draw or maybe even steal a win, and have them ready to go for the following game

but of course, this is everton, and we all know how likely that'll be
