At least some of these other teams are playing some ok football - were not and that’s the problem !

Not sure if its possible for performances on the pitch to get worse.

It will get better (I'm trusting we will get a new manager bounce) but better this season league-table wise is likely mid-table. Even top-half at the moment seems a mountain to climb.
