They tried for Kudus and I think had some hope for Broja...

Usually id say rather sign nobody than duds and kick the can down the road but our attack has no one with the goals or assists to their game to keep us away from relegation.

We didn't even have a recognised striker a fair few games j to the season - it's those margins that could make all the difference.
We gambled from a very weak position once Richarlison went. It's backfired and that gamble now threatens us with relegation.

Who determined that plan is open to question.

IMO the board are ultimately resonsible for half a decade or more of catastrophic spending and book keeping which led to the gamble.

That was before all I just said - Richarlison was always leaving to ensure compliance. He wanted off anyway - our position just dictated he was going no matter what. Lampard knew he was off last season.

He left 1st July. We spent a few bob after that and clearly, we weren't replacing Richarlison but it as a pitiful attempt to mitigate his loss.

Rejected a big bid for Gordon, agreed to McNeil (£20m?), Onana (£33m?), Maupay £15m?), Garner (£15m?), Gana (no idea but reckon 5m+) transfers.

The attack we had dictated relegation scrap.

The team that started last season, was better than this season.

Our situation is not on Lampard, but he's not Teflon either.

oh it’s on the board mate its simple as that

The recruitment was dire. There's no getting away from that, nor Lampard's hand in it. However, the Kudus situation was unfortunate, and he was obvioulsy chasing a starting forward in the final 2 weeks of the window and it never happened.

Overall though I think the Thelwell / Lampard partnership maybe identified a 66 goal leaking defence as the priority to sort out. Solve that and our problems would be manageable with a half decent tally of goals. That was THE miscalculation and it's one we might not be able to rectify from January.
Lampard signed off on Deli Ali on his first day. That felt like a red flag at the time. Our big problem is the balance of our squad. Coady, Tark, Onana and gueye are good signings. We are bereft of attacking and creative quality. We also can’t go the set piece route because our biggest threats (DCL and Mina) are sick notes. Can’t see where the goals are coming from. One thought I had was if we got a penalty in the next game who would take it? I would not have any confidence in it being converted

Recruitment under Lampard hasn't been good. McNeil and Maupay in particular have been atrocious. However, apart from Onana who cost a lot of cash, he's not had an awful lot of money to make mistakes with.

Let's put it this way: if we were in even Year of 4 or 5 of the Moshiri ownership period he'd have been able to sell Richarlison, spend that cash and then backed again in the final weeks of the window last summer to spend decent cash on another striker...and backed again this coming window

I think overall we have to say that both he and Benitez have to be viewed in a different light to other Moshiri-era managers.

What year did the current situation start? We seem to have been going downhill for so many years!
For me, tgdd ex situation started with the signing of Niasse. A player who clearly wasn’t good enough, but stuck around to see his contract out. The first of many who went down that route. Hopeless signings on large salaries and no sell on fee.

You could argue we never fully adapted to the Premier League era as throughout the 90s and beyond as there was periods of awfulness and mismanagement.

We have had to sell the likes of Rooney and Arteta to appease the banks. Duncan Ferguson was sold to Newcastle. We ended up having to play Steve Watson up front away at Fulham due to injuries and money troubles. Things keep repeating themselves.

No need to play Lewin tomorrow even if fit. With him maybe 6-0, without him also maybe 6-0. Even Mbappe up front would make no difference to us tomorrow. Might as well rest Tarkowski and Patterson too for Brighton.

It was a mistake not to pursue Brereton-Diaz on deadline day. We had to finish the window with at least one option, and ended up with none.

We might go down with very small margins in play. As it is they should be applying maximum effort to get someone in next week, let alone by the end of January.

Southampton and Forest are down for me. After that it’s between us, wolves, Leeds and Bournemouth. West Ham will turn it around. Wolves got a new manager bounce now and will sign some players in January that could help them. Haven’t a clue about Leeds. Bournemouth worry me as I though they would be dead and buried already with the squad they have. They also got new owners and could spunk some money.
They also have one or two players who know where the net is
